Every black person, young and old must go to this museum. However, You have to go thru Detroit to get there but I suggest you close your eyes to the city and head on over to the museum. It is in the form of a slave ship. The slave owners are actually making trading deals to sell the slaves and all the things that went on In that era is in that museum. Once in, you will feel like you are a part of that time period. Now I'm not saying anymore, don't want to spoil it for you. Just head on over, you won't be sorry. A must see!

This museum takes a balanced look at the journey of black folks in Detroit from their African roots to their successes in the 20th Century. The middle of the exhibit's flow is a life-sized diorama of many aspects of this history.

This was an event/site at my family reunion. It was important for us to have our kids to visit. It was so visual and all of us became emotional as we went in the hull of the ship. So realistic. I loved this site visit.

We are experienced museum go-ers and the displays in this museum are unique, powerful and not to be missed. In addition to art and educational displays, there are many hands-on displays from the Civil Rights era. The life-sized display of the transAtlantic slave crossings will make you catch your breath with an almost real-life horror of the experience. If we had any complaints it is that tour guides are few and far between. The one that we encountered was very informed - just not enough of them. Wonderful gift shop! We ticked several grandchildren's Christmas gifts off our list!!

The African American Museum is definitely a must see for the city of Detroit. My last visit was April 2013 and my favorite exhibit was in honor of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Celebrating 100 Years! There is so much to see, to learn and be inspired by at this museum.
