“Stunning set of falls”

Reviewed August 17, 2014

We visited this park exclusively for the falls. Its about an hour outside of Munising, but was worth the trek in my opinion. The path to get to the parking is dirt/gravel, but is manageable. Parking was relatively limited, which would have been a complaint if there were more people at the time we went, but we did it early on a Saturday morning (9-10-ish) and it worked out just fine. There is a relatively short hike on paved paths to the falls (about a half-mile if memory serves). There are a few viewing decks, one at the top, middle, and bottom. Stairs only to get from top to bottom, but nothing bad at all. The falls themselves are quite amazing, pouring out onto a sloped rock surface which ends in a small creek below. Recommended if in the Munising area visiting in the falls. Need the recreation pass to visit per park signs.

We saw this waterfall listed on the area attractions map we got in Munising and decided to make the drive out to see it. The area map does not give the best directions. We went through Chatham as instructed but had no idea how far we had to go past Chatham to find Sundale Rd. It was easily 15 minutes past the town. We had just decided to give up and turn around when I finally saw the sign for the falls. The hike out was nice and the steps down to the bottom of the falls allowed for some amazing views. The view from the top actually makes the falls look less impressive so be sure to take the steps all the way to the bottom. We saw all of the falls on the Munising area attractions map and these were the most gorgeous-by far. Definitely worth the drive time. We will go back again.

Worth the trip, if you’re willing to do a little extra work to find it! Make sure you have an appropriate vehicle, especially when muddy. The falls are located off a dirt road, almost a two-track, but don't let that deter you. Markings for the falls are scarce, but they are there. The parking area is nothing more than a small loop. You’ll find a pump and a picnic table or two, but that’s about it. The hike is pretty and fairly short – about a mile out and back. We were there mid-summer, so the top of the falls was shallow. It was flat enough to play and cool off in. There are 130 steps down to the bottom of the falls. The stairs doesn’t open to the bottom of the falls, just a landing. I’m sure in spring the water comes right up to the landing, but not in the height of summer. There’s about a 4’ – 5’ drop to the ground and then some wading/rock balancing you need to do if you want a head-on pic of the falls. Not that I am encouraging exiting the landing. Either way, the falls are quite impressive and beautiful.
