This was our fourth stay and we weren't disappointed. You feel at home at this hotel the minute you walk in the door. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and the lovely home cooked food very tasty and filling after a long days walking! Packed lunches available as are tea and scones mid afternoon. Rooms warm, clean and comfortable. Met lots of interesting people during our stay. We will return again hopefully in the not too distant future.

My boyfriend & I stayed at the Royal Oak for one night during a hike through the Lake District. Of all hotels on that trip, this was our favourite. Our room in the annex was huge and comfortable. We enjoyed the common room with books & sofas. But the best thing about the place was the service. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us. Knowing that we've been drenched on the way, they switched on all heaters prior to our arrival (something other hotels refused to in July), adjusted dinner to our needs on very short notice, and were generally thoughtful but easy-going. Thank you, we greatly enjoyed it.

This is a really old Hotel, but a very friendly staff, fun pub, extra large rooms with additional beds, and grapefruit body wash which smelled heavenly after a day of hiking The floors were a little tilted, but it only added character to the place. An extra touch was the real milk for our tea in our rooms. The dinner was great and the dessert was incredible (Bakewell Tart) which the manager made herself.

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night whilst walking the coast to Coast walk. The rooms were clean and tidy and larger than average. The bar was very small had did not have a large choce of drinks but you could go next door to the Scafell hotel for a decent beer, the food was a set menu (three courses) with everyone going in to eat at the same time of 7.30 at the sound of a gong!!!. Staff were very friendly the ensuite bedroom was one of the few places on our route that had a bath in which to soak your aching joints if need be, a definate bonus.

Stayed here on our coast to coast trip, really enjoyed our stay and set meal. Room was good in size and had a bath. Really enjoyed having no television or Wifi in rooms apart from lounge, more ally made people interact. Many people came back year on year to stay and I can understand why.
