We spent 5 nights at the Scafell Hotel. We accept that everything does not always go well during hotel stays, the 'acid test' being how the hotel responds when told of a fault. Despite numerous entreaties from staff, our shower refused to work. Without quibble, the hotel receptionist changed our room.
In fact all the staff we came across were helpful and polite. Breakfast was excellent and served quickly after our arrival in the breakfast room. We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant but on most nights ate in the Riverside Bar, which is alongside the hotel. The Riverside Bar is popular with walkers, which suited us as we were in the Lake District to do some walking. If you prefer a quiet and cosy bar then avoid this one during busy night-time periods as it's full of people noisily swapping experiences of their day or planning tomorrow; although you would be missing the food, which was very good. The comfortable hotel lounge had an an open fire, which was regularly stoked by the staff; so if you prefer a quite drink, use this facility - as we did on a couple of nights.
Overall, our experience of The Scafell Hotel was both welcoming and friendly. It was an ideal base for exploring beautiful Borrowdale.More
