We have admired Hazel Bank for years when visiting Rosthwaite, and finally decided to abandon self-catering and be pampered…. It will be hard to return to our former habits. Gary and Donna went out of their way to make us feel cosseted and cared for, our room was just lovely, the food was wonderful and we couldn't fault a thing. Gary is the perfect host, interested and interesting, and Donna the perfect hostess and chef. They clearly spend a lot of time training their staff who are a credit to them, and feeding the red squirrels, woodpeckers and finches who they have trained to watch you having breakfast.

Two visits this year - in snowy March and russet-coloured October - confirm that new owners Gary and Donna Macrae have really got it right. They are the epitome of cheerful, welcoming, efficient and expert hosts and our stays in this lovely valley were a delight. Meals were excellent, with breakfasts cooked to order and the dinner menus perfectly balanced and delicious. The overpowering decor of years gone by has been replaced with a much lighter and brighter touch which has transformed Hazel Bank. Walks of all grades start at the end of the drive and it is only a few minutes by car to beautiful Derwentwater and Buttermere. After a day's exertions it is lovely to relax in front of a roaring log fire with a Cumberland Ale, looking out on the timeless fells.

What a find! We just stayed for two nights and could not have left more relaxed.

On arrival Donna was very welcoming and took us to our room and then bought us coffee and cake in the lounge area which was very well received after a long journey.
The room itself (Great Gable) was very spacious with plenty of storage space and an excellent bathroom. We couldn't think of anything that was missing in the room at all.
The view across the dale from the room was breath taking.

The menu for the evening meal was available to view earlier in the day and we were told to let Donna know if we required any changes. We didn't like to be picky but requested a couple of changes which Donna and Gary were more than happy to deal with without making any fuss.
The food itself was delicious and could not be faulted in any way.
The evening meal was 4 courses with coffee. The food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious.
The cooked breakfast was also unmissable and set us up for the day!

The hotel is perfectly located to explore Derwent Water, Borrowdale, Keswick and the surrounding areas with lovely walks from the hotel without getting in your car.

We will definitely be visiting again.

Room Tip: We stayed in 'Great Gable' which had excellent views to the front of the hotel.

We stayed for 2 nights in late October, and received a very warm welcome from Gary, with tea and delicious cake on arrival. The room was spacious, with a large comfy bed, and endless hot water for those much needed baths after days walking the fells. We took dinner at the hotel both nights, which I was slightly wary of, as it is a set menu, and I have a few food dislikes. However, I needn't have worried - my fussy food requests were catered for without question, and the food was excellent on both evenings. Breakfast too was of a very high standard, and was my favourite part of the stay, as the dining room overlooks the garden which has well stocked bird and red squirrel feeders, which I could have watched for hours. Gary was a very attentive host and it was lovely to be able to chat freely with the owners about this beautiful corner of the country. The hotel was easy to find and well placed for walks, such that you can forget your car for the day if you wish. Unfortunately, the weather was extremely wet and misty during our stay, so we were not able to enjoy the beautiful scenery as much as we might have hoped. However, this gives us the perfect excuse to return again next year, which I hope we will be able to do. Many thanks to Donna and Gary for a delightful stay.

I use Tripadvisor regularly but don't think I've ever seen a hotel where all reviews are rated excellent. Having just spent three nights at Hazel Bank, I can see why Garry and Donna have achieved it.

From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel most welcome. Our room, bathroom and the guest lounge were all immaculate, really comfortable and a treat to spend time in. Mealtimes were excellent, lovely food all freshly prepared by Donna, and a fantastic range of wines to accompany food.

I guess we were lucky in that all the other guests were really sociable and it almost turned into a house party - don't think we were too noisy!

After a wet day on the fells our gear needed drying and Garry took it all down to the basement drying room for us. We were out very early the next day as we wanted to be on the summit of Great Gable in time for the 11.00 Remembrance Day gathering. Our dry gear was back in the porch ready to take by 7.15 that morning and Garry and Donna cooked us an early breakfast to get us on our way.

Thank you so much for a memorable weekend. Am sure we'll be back.

It rained for much of the 3 days we were there but each evening as we returned we were greeted by Gary with a quip or two & knew that we could look forward to a drink & nibble in front of the fire in the lounge prior to an excellent Dinner. Gary was a perfect host - it's a fine line between being hospitable & being OTT but he had it just right - always appearing interested & chatty without being overpowering. I think we had one of the smaller rooms & whilst we have stayed in more luxurious accommodation, it is not often that we have enjoyed the overall experience any better.

Wanted a short break in the Lakes at very short notice. What a find. A superb setting and that was just the start. The whole 3-night stay was wonderful. The problem is that by sharing this gem through this review means that the chances of being able to get in when we want to go back (as we surely will!) become very difficult!
The whole atmosphere of the place is something that cannot be understated! The very friendly and warm reception and the cup of tea in the comfortable residents lounge with lovely views on arrival is just the start. Donna and Gary have created an environment where it is very easy to talk and chatter to ones fellow like-minded guests - both in the afternoon over tea, with pre-dinner and after dinner drinks. and even at breakfast after a night in a very comfortable room and bed!
The food deserves a special mention. The home cooking is splendid and imaginative, both the 4 course set dinner and the breakfast overlooking the woods with the red squirrels keeping an eye on what is happening! My wife cannot tolerate garlic - no trouble for Donna who made separate dishes for her when there was garlic on the menu!
The service was attentive and unobtrusive but very efficient!
A great short break! We will return - if we can get in!
