“An odd hike to the bottom.”

Owner description: Manganese Falls is fed by Lake Manganese, a pristine little lake worth visiting too. The falls are at the mercy of the seasons. The falls run rampant in spring with all the snowmelt (270" average) and rainfall. Then as the season progresses, they become much less intense ending in fall as not much more than a trickle. The box canyon that surrounds the falls is a beautiful and dramatic 100 foot drop. It is lined with mosses, ferns and other boreal fringe flora, making it worth the stop even in the fall. There is a scenic trail that leads down and over a bridge to the lower end of the falls. It is definitely worth taking if you have the time.

My husband and I were driving through Copper Harbor when we saw a sign for the Falls.

We followed a larger group ahead of us who had just parked roadside to hike down to the Falls.

The main entranceway where the sign is located has a path going downward towards the bottom of the Falls. In order to get to the bottoms it's a very steep hill, at one point my husband and I had to slide down some rocks on our bottoms in order to have a good grip.

Quite an adventure!
Once at the bottom through we realized the best view would probably be from the top... so we had to climb all the way back up. About 50 feet up the road from where the sign is located, there is a second, more hidden trail that takes you about 100 feet off the road, and you can view the top of the Falls from there.

It's a very short hike both ways regardless. But once you figure out your best viewing point, they're pretty neat.

Worth checking out for sure!

Swung in while on a bicycle ride. The falls in the UP are fabulous. Get out and have a look it's worth it. Many are close to the road like Manganese. Enjoy

Although it was only a couple of minutes off the road, it was a waste of time. You can't see the falls through the foliage.

This falls is extremely easy to get to. It is basically right off the road. However because of the angle of the lookout point, and the vegetation, it is hard to actually see the falls.

The falls probably would be pretty impressive, but it is very difficult to get a good view of them. If there was a trail down to the bottom, it was not easily found. Rather than hopping on the trail right at the brown sign (fall marker), it is better to walk a little further up the road (away from Copper Harbor) and enter there. This places you at the top of the waterfall, but allows you to see more than you would at the viewing platform. Obviously these suggestions may not apply in winter when the tree canopy is absent.
