“Fine for one night. A decent budget hotel in Charlevoix”
Reviewed August 24, 2009

I don't know what the previous reviewers paid for their room but they should keep in mind that if you want luxury, you are going to have to pay for it, especially during the summer in Charlevoix.

It is typical to have to pay over $200 for a weekend night during the summer in Charlevoix. You can get a standard room for $129 on a weekend night here.

We stayed here on a Thursday night, on our way to catch the ferry to Beaver Island in the morning, and paid $79 for the night. For Charlevoix, in August, that is a downright bargain and you can't beat the location. Less than a two minute walk to the shops and restaurants of downtown.

While I have definitely stayed in better places, I have also stayed in worse and there is nothing terribly wrong with this place but it does have its quirks.

I agree that parking would be a problem at this hotel if you are there during a crowded time. The lot is small and is inadequate for the amount of rooms they have on the property. I also agree that the room could use some more lighting and is dated.

As for the shower head, it is situated a little bit lower than in most hotels but the shower head did tilt up and I thought it worked fine.

On the positive side, there was a refrigerator in the room and the lodge does have an elevator that you can use. The person checking me in was also very friendly, helpful, and nice. I could be biased, though, since he was a Michigan State fan.

Overall, I probably wouldn't want to stay here for an extended amount of time but if you are just looking for a reasonably priced place to sleep in Charlevoix for one or two nights, this place will serve your needs.

1. The smell. Let me give you an idea: think church basement, sealed off room with water damage, 1970's shag carpet.
2. The decor- 1970's, dark paneling, dim lighting...{{{shudder}}}.
3. The linens (loosely speaking) are threadbare, scratchy, and well used.
4. The bathroom has no hair dryer and weak neon lighting...refer to smell above as well.
5. I am 5'6" and the shower head only reached my chin...needed to tilt mildew covered shower head up over my head or bend down to clean. And considering our proximity to the water...ironically little to no water pressure in shower. More like a spitter than a shower.
6. Continental breakfast is a joke...unless you're big into plain cheerios and cold coffee.
7. No room service...in fact the front desk lacks a computer and had trouble "remembering" if they charged us.
8. No ironing board, iron, or coffee pot in room.
9. Inadequate parking left us circling the tiny lot hoping to find a spot.
10. EXORBINANT prices. If this place were picked up and dropped in the middle of downtown Detroit they would be lucky to get $29.99 for a room. You're paying for the location only!! Don't expect to enjoy the room...in fact, spend as little time in it if possible if you really must stay here. Better yet...save the money and pony-up for a nicer place with a view...They call this place the lodge...perhaps they think that gives them license to have the place look and smell like a run-down outhouse...as opposed to a place named "the palace"!

We came to town for a wedding and stayed in a room, along with a lot of other wedding guests staying in various rooms. In talking with others, we all had the same opinions. Everyone was thoroughly disappointed with their stay. The location is in a great spot, within walking distance of all the shops and parks. That's where the positive ends. Now the negatives: the rooms smelled old and musty (everyone else said the same). The decor is very dark and outdated with dark wood paneling on the walls. You get a small fridge, but no coffee maker, hair dryer, or iron. The bathroom is dark and the shower head comes to most people's chins with very light water pressure. There is insufficient parking for everyone - you may be stuck parking on a side street. The "free" breakfast is a joke - it consists of coffee, apple juice, plain cheerios, and bagels. Go to Flapjacks down the road for a real breakfast. I don't know how they can get away with charging $130+ per night (after taxes). Next time we visit this lovely little town, we wouldn't stay here, even if they charged $50/night. It's still not worth it. Spend your money at someplace much nicer.
