“A Real Gem!”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

The NPS has done a nice job in bringing the interesting, important and colorful past of the copper mining days to visitors. This area is unique and should be preserved. The copper industry had a very significant impact on American history and Copper Country of Michigan played a major role. Also the lumber and sandstone industries. Very worthwhile Park. Kudos to all the local residents of Calumet and Laurium who helped bring the Park here and kudos to the NPS for carrying it out so well.

The Keeweenaw is a beautiful area border by Lake Superior on three sides. There is so much to see! It is worth the trip.

“Wonderful…Who’d have thought there was a mining boom in the UP?”
Reviewed May 31, 2013

Give yourself time for this tour. There is a lot to learn about the Keweenaw and the Upper Peninsula. We took the national park service guided tour through the historic district. The park service guided described the history of mining industry and shared stories about the various buildings. The tour provided a good understanding of what we wanted to explore more on our own.

We spent an entire day walking through the town, visiting shops, peeking in on historic sites, and stopping in restaurants and bars for lunch, dinner, and refreshments.

We went in the fall and drove all the way up to Copper Harbor. Lots of twists in the road and a beautiful tree canopy in a variety of colors.

“End of the Earth and then some. A true paradise.”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

The visitors center in Calumet is excellent. So much history in a magnificent building. An absolute must see and excellent starting point for the Keweenaw Park. Please note that the Keweenaw Park is virtually the entire Keweenaw peninsula. Be sure to review the Heritage Sites and plan your trip wisely - some sites are many miles away from others. Start in Houghton/Hancock at the Finnish American Heritage Center, stop on Quincy HIll for panoramic views of the Portage Canal and Lift Bridge. Next stop on Quincy Hill is the mine....take a mine tour and tram ride. That is just the beginning so plan enough time. Copper Harbor is about 45 miles north of Houghton/Hancock and you can spend several days touring there as well. Ft. Wilkins State Park is also excellent. You can also catch the Isle Royale Queen ferry to Isle Royale from Copper Harbor.
