Description: The Blue Heron serves an excellent breakfast and lunch in large proportions; they are not open for dinner. Food is always fresh and unique. Daily lunches include a choice of 2 homemade soups w/complimentary homemade sourdough bread and a variety of sandwiches on homemade sourdough bread or wraps. Salads are always freshly made and filled with fruit, vegetables, and/or meat with tasty dressings. Two baker's display cases are filled each morning with fresh cookies, fried cakes, muffins, bagels, pies, cakes, and a large variety of sweet rolls, baked on site. Customers congregate there for coffee and a choice of doughnut or cookie. Their breakfasts are hearty and delicious. The owner is the cook, and it is a treat to find such a high quality restaurant in this small tourist town.

“Make sure you get a donut on the way out!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2012

We stopped for lunch at the Blue Heron while driving through Michigan. The sandwiches were interesting, I had an egg salad sandwich with smoked salmon and onions. It was really good. The sandwiches just came with some plain tortilla chips. The service was very friendly and fast. There is a bakery there too and the glazed donut I had was probably the best donut I have ever eaten. Makes me want to drive back to Michigan some day just to get another.

It is a short drive from the highway, maybe five minutes, and well worth the stop.

“Excellent Baked items”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 13, 2012

The menu at Blue Heron is filled with new interpretations of classic breakfast and lunch dishes. Somewhere between a small town Diner/ Bakery and a big city cafe. I have been here several times, and the only thing that is inconsistent is the potatoes, which are tricky at the best places. Everything baked is great, the sandwiches are interesting enough to have more than once, and the soups are unique in the area. Many of the lunch items veer towards sweet in taste, but even with this caveat, everything is good. A few more savory options would make this restaurant a five star choice in Cadillac. Disclaimer, I do know the owner, but I think this is still a fair and balanced review.

“Really good quality food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2012

I frequent this lunch spot at least twice a month, they serve good quality products. Market salad, Nature Lovers salad and most of their sandwiches are usually really good. A couple times I received over-crisp bread (aka burnt), so I always ask for lightly toasted now. They have different soups of the day also.

“Terrific sandwiches!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2012

This is our go-to place when we are at our cottage. Sandwiches are served on homemade sourdough and are creatively assembled with unique ingredients. Try the Tuscan Ham and Cheese--you won't be disappointed! Good breakfast, good service, good bakery items, too.
