Stopped by here twice this summer. Once just out of season. Dogs are allowed on part of the beach, which is very nice. Lake is very nice to swim in. Clean. There are usually activities going on during the summer, big inflatable things for the kids, kayak rentals, hang gliding, sledding down the dunes. Perfect for a day at the lake. $8 for out of state tags.

3 miles of shoreline and incredible views if you are willing to hike up the dune. Well worth it.
$8 to enter the park.
Come early to stake your spot (recommend a tent/shade/beach umbrella if you are going to be there all day) as it gets crowded and as others have mentioned H.O.T. -- beach shoes are a must! We spent 5 hours and could have stayed longer...but you could stay a shorter time if you just wanted to take a quick walk along the beach.
Prices at concession stand were fair and gave us options for things we didn't try and bring with us (such as ice cream and hot, crisp french fries! I think we spent less than $30 for 6 people.
Many people bring in their RV/trailer and set-up in far spots of the lot to have a home base. Not sure if there is an additional charge for those types of vehicles.
Wonderful beach, clean, soft sand and the water was good too. It's not the carribbean but there were sand bar spots where I could see to the bottom which truly surprised me.
Some rentals (kayak, etc.) and amusements are available for additional fee.
We went the day of the Chicago Air and Water Show and had hoped we might see some of the planes etc. but Lake Michigan is large and what we saw were water funnels -- which were pretty cool from a distance. Note that the closer you get to the concession stand the more crowded it is and the crowd seemed a bit more rambunctious. Glad we staked out as far as we could get from it which also put us conveniently near the kayak rentals.

Took a day trip here from Chicagoland on Labor Day in 2012. The total drive was a little under two hours including one stop for gas. The ride was pretty boring without much to see or do on the way, but at least there was little or no traffic on the way there. There was a small line to pay as you entered the park, but it only took several minutes to get through. We arrived about 10:30am and it costs $8 for the car. There were two of us and our dog, which the person taking our money noticed and gave us instructions for the dog portion of the beach.

Parking was abundant and while there were people there, it was not crowded at all that early in the morning. We started by hiking up the steep side of the main dune (wanted to do it before it was too hot and there were too many people). We took our time with lots of rests and slowly made our way to the very top. Great exercise, very fun, good views from the top. Relaxed at the top and then ran back down, which was really a great experience. We brought our small dog up and down this part of the dunes, and not sure if he was really allowed. The area was predominantly families.

We then spent most of our day in the dog area of the beach, which is the far north end of the shoreline (there are signs and directions to indicate as such). You must keep your dog leashed at all times, which is kind of a negative since you can't play fetch really. But you can go out and swim with your dog, run up and down the edge of the water, etc. By mid-day the place had a ton of people but did not feel overly crowded still. Concession stand is your typical "snack bar" type food and priced a little high but nothing outrageous. The sand has a great consistency to it and the scenery is beautiful. Water was still pretty cool, even this time of year, but shallow a ways in and still makes for a fun time. Lots of kids running around, frisbees flying, people sprawled out and reading and watching from blankets everywhere.

Toward the end we walked along one of the trails to dry off a bit. Gorgeous and unique setting to go on a hike. I wish we had more time for more exploring since it's such a huge state park and most people don't seem to get much past the beach area. Maybe in the fall we will return when it isn't as hot and the leaves have changed and explore a little more. Highly recommend this for everybody to see and experience at least once.

I've been coming here since I was a child and it really hasn't changed much! The dunes are awesome, the beach is awesome. The restrooms are pretty gross but we don't use them if we don't have to.
