With so many signs to so many sites of importance you can easily miss this one but having a wife with South African roots we were on a mission. You really must go there, a magnificent memorial and a wonderfully curated museum. In fact we found a photograph of the General and Colonel my wife's great uncle had fought under in what is now Namibia. He died at Thiepval so finding references to his life prior to this was truly a bonus. The woods have a mystical quality so a walk through them is an experience.

Travelling through the Somme area in search of WW1 sights we came upon this stunning and amazing South African War Memorial and Museum. It feels like it is in the middle of nowhere and you really do not expect to find anything like it. The museum is a little hidden off the main road in the forest (woods). Superb displays and some fabulous art work. Great parking facilities and super clean toilets too.

The site is very well maintained. The area is very beautiful. It is amazing to look at pictures of the area at the time of the war and the scale of death and then see what it looks like today. The museum is not open over winter so check your dates. As a South African I found the place very moving and I was glad to have been there after reading about Delville Woods for so long.

My grandfather fought in the war there and was one of the few to return - it was a moving personal experience, but even without that, the site is well maintained and does well to convey the horrific battle that took place there.

It wasn't so easy to find a way to the Somme by public transport and we could only find one rather pricey tour through Viator. However, the tour was extremely good and exceeded my expectations - the guide (Bertrand) was extremely knowledgeable and conveyed his knowledge in a way that made you really feel like you could experience the site and the battles that had taken place there.

Despite the price, it worth a visit if you have an interest on World War I. Although Delville Wood is on the listed itenary, the tour doesn't always go there - make sure to ask to go - it is really worth seeing even if you aren't South African.

Yet another moving and beautifully designed & kept memorial. The last surviving tree from 1916 is located here, and just walking through the woods summons up all sorts of emotion. As with other Somme locations, this was the scene of a huge loss of life - and this fact is captured with real respect and dignity.
