Boyne Mountain Resort

Reviewed January 11, 2010

I loved the Boyne Mountain Resort website and could not wait to stay there with my family last year. Unfortunately, 5 days before we were suppose to be there, we had to cancel our plans due to unforeseen circumstances. I canceled the reservation and inquired about our refund. I was informed that they automatically charge you for the first night stay if you cancel with less than 7 days. But, they keep that amount on a "house" account for one year so you could reschedule. When I attempted to reschedule for late January, 2010 for one night to use my "house" credit, I was informed that I had to book at least a 3 night minimum over a weekend! The agent's suggestion was for me to book a night during the week! My advice to anyone out there is to make really, really sure this is the place you want to be and that you know everything before you book! Also, I would like to echo other reviewers comments about their lengthy wait time for the phone and difficult online reservations. Clearly, this place isn't interested at all in customer service and I will never book here again.

This resort offers one of the best skiing experiences in MI, but the customer service at the hotel was very disappointing. Very understaffed, had trouble getting through to a live person for reservations, room service, activities, ski school, etc. Guest Services personnel were negative, bitter and didn't seem to like their job... actually several of the employees did not seem to like their job, or dealing with tourists. It is also very pricey, we spent close to $2500 for four nights... not really worth it in the end.

Stayed here with our very active 13 month old son. Enjoyed large open (outdoor, grassy) spaces for him to play. During summer months, you can ride on the ski lift to the top of the "mountain," then walk/bike/ride lift back down. Regular indoor/outdoor combo pool was nice, not too busy while we were there. Too young for indoor waterpark, but we'll definitely do that next time when he's more sure on his feet! There is a small beach nearby as well. Room was very comfortable and spacious- we had "Innsbruck suite." We took our bikes, which they will keep at the concierge until you want to use them. Great place to visit!

We stayed at Boyne Mountain we wanted to make sure that others that are headed there don't make the same mistake! The room was a nightmare the heating and cooling only worked on one setting.....HOT we had to sleep with the window open and still no relief. When we let the staff know they were no help she said oh yeah I forgot to tell you that those rooms only work on one setting either hot or cold you can't set the temp. NICE.....how convenient you forgot to tell us at check in. We were a little upset to pay $237 for the package and have such a bad experience they did offer their manager to call however still have not heard from them. Not holding my breath. I would suggest staying somewhere else even if you have to drive. Petoskey is a beautiful city and only 15 minutes away and they have several hotel options. Good luck in making your decision I just wanted to make sure everyone knew what they were signing up for! Word from the wise.... Make sure you have the proper temp room !

My husband and I stayed at the Grand Mountain lodge the last week of July and loved it. They upgraded us to a suite with a fireplace and balcony. There are so many things to do at the resort that are included. We went to deer lake one day and did the kayaking and put-put which was free. The resurant there had fantastic food ,the home made potatoe chips were great. The next day we did the hike up into the mountain, just beautiful scenery with views of the golf courses and deer lake. They also use that paved path for mountain biking. They hook your bike on the chair lift and you ride down the mountain, this happens later in the day when they open the chair lift.. Unfortunately my husband had his golf clubs stolen right before we left so we didn't get to golf, but the courses were beautiful, with very scenic first tees high up on the mountain top. They have activities for children planned every day. One day we biked the Travrese wheelway which is paved and a very nice ride with some scenic stops. It runs from charlevoix thru petoskey (both nice little towns). We were up there this past winter for some skiing and also had a wonderful trip. We stayed at the deer lake villas with family. We had a updated villa that was very nice. It was decorated in a french country decor and we loved it. Not stinking and dated as the previous review stated. The spa is very nice and so is the indoor outdoor pool. They keep it heated and it was the highlight of my trip, to be outdoors swimming with the snow flakes coming down all around me, watching the skiers coming down the mountain. Every trip is what you make of it and this place is great.

I have to disagree with the previous review. We took two of our 3 boys to Boyne Mountain. 13 and 9 years old. I investigated the resort thoroughly, and we stayed in the Disciples Village. Their website stated that Disciples Village was one of the nicer condo type units to stay in. The price was very reasonable. Stay 4 nights, get 1 free. The units were very nice. Clean. 2 and 1/2 baths, 1 master bedroom with king bed, a large loft bedroom with 2 queen beds, living room and kitchen. Totally generic decor, but that was fine.
We found lots to do. We rented bikes one day and rode on one of their many bike paths. Swam in Deer Lake. Kayaked in Deer Lake. They had a 9 hole putting green and shuffle board. All was free except the bike rentals. We spent a morning in the waterpark. It was a very good waterpark, according to our boys. The scenery is very pretty. They have one of the chair lifts running each late afternoon/evening. That was a fun thing to do for free too. At the top we hiked around and checked out some of the ski hills. The restaurants, though looked tired, had very good pub type food. We didn't have a bad dinner there. We ate breakfast and lunch in our room each day. If you are a skier, it looks like a great place to stay in the winter. LOTS of runs and chairlifts throughout the property. There is a Spa, though we didn't check that out. Finally, we found it to be a good home base. We spent a day in Mackinac Island. 50 minute ride to the ferry dock. We stopped in Harbor Springs on the way back to Boyne Mountain Resort. Lovely town. Great dinner and views of the Lake and boats at Stafford's Pier restaurant.

We have stayed at Boyne Mtn. multiple times. We usually come up as a large group and stay in the Disciples Village Condos. The Diciples Ridge condos are very nice, spacious. Full kitchens so one can eat out less.

Boyne is a great resort. There is everything here. In the winter, the skiing and apres ski are phenomenal. It is not the Rockies but great Midwestern skiing. In the summer, the golf is great. Deer Lake Beach is a 3 minute drive. Lovely beach, clean, with bar and restaurant right there, not to mention the putt putt, free kayaks and tennis courts. And year round there is the waterpark, always good for a rainy day or non-skiiers. My kids also love the arcade. Lots of good food choices. And there are also good hiking and biking trails.

Also, free shuttles can take you around the resort.

Can't say enough about the place. We've spent many wonderful vacations here.
