I took my 9 year old nephew and it was amazing. So much to see. The bat house is so cool. The tour allows you to get up close and personal. The dinosaurs are so great. Everything a kid wants to see, hear, and touch. I went to my local library and with you library card you can check out the Cranbrook admission card. No fee for free. Check with your local library.

I love the Cranbrook Institute Of Science. Such a fun experience for people of all ages! In the time i went many attraction werent open. That was my only complaint. The bat, dinosaur and planetarium were closed. A little disappointed but with free motion theater and many attraction ranging fromm animals to earth i was kept plenty busy with my family!

The Cranbrook Institute of Science is tucked away in the upper-class suburb of Bloomfield Hills on the beautiful grounds of the elite, private Cranbrook school system. It is small (2 levels) so it's very manageable for bringing the grandparents and it is also very seldom crowded. The two main areas focus on dinosaurs/history of the earth and a huge room of precious rocks and minerals. There are also areas of space exploration (with daily star shows that some kids love and others find terribly boring), motion and balance, weather, and a room of preserved critters of all sizes. There are a few hands-on displays for children though it is not technically a 'children's museum', it is a science institute. Still the museum is certainly child-friendly. A restaurant offers reasonable prices for sandwiches, soups and pizza. The highlight is often the traveling exhibit which occupies half of the lower level, along with a nice gift shop. Check their website before you go to see what the traveling exhibit will be when you are there. Cranbrook participates in reciprocity agreements with other science museums so if you are a member elsewhere, see if you can get free or discounted admission. The Bat Zone is in another building and costs extra. It is only two rooms but also has a sloth and flying squirrels. All in all, a very pleasant, educational experience for the whole family.

The Bat Zone is home to over 100 bats from around the world. Surrounding the Bat Zone are three hundred acres of woodland trails, a glacial boulder path, and pole-mounted bat houses. The Bat Zone is open to guests that attend an "Incredible Bats" live bat program. I went to the bat zone to see the live bat's - including vampire bats! The volunteers show great enthusiasm and have a passion for bats. When you travel to SE Michigan, check out the zone.
