The lodging was comfortable, but decorated in a spartan way. Not alot of furnature or frills. But when only a comfortable bed, clean surroundings are required, it more than fit the bill. The pub portion of the inn was decorated in north-woods style, with knotty pine wall panels, fish mounts, and photos. The food was excellent. I ordered the soup of the day as an appetizer and it was both hot and delicious. The main course was delicious too. Service was pretty good for most of the meal. Well worth the drive from Munising.

Room Tip: Not much to add. Thunder Bay is very quiet so all rooms likewise.

Having called ahead to find out what the "soup of the day" was, and having traveled 85 miles to this restaraunt, we were disappointed to find they did not have the soup. Still, we stayed and ordered fish fry dinner. The waitress was extremely slow, service was terrible and the food nothing to write home about. No one, including the owner, seemed to care how far we came to be so disappointed. We will not be going there again and I warn other people - even if you call ahead - don't believe what they tell you!

Have you ever wished to find a really cool, cozy, comfortable bar to while away a wintry or stormy afternoon? This is the place. What a surprise, and utter delight, to discover this place for my first visit this past weekend. I stopped in with my business partner and realtor while in the area to look at land deals. The varied menu, fairly priced, was complemented by a great selection of beers (PBR and Stroh's!), and served up with the most friendly, hospitable staff. We lingered for a couple of hours, and then pulled ourselves away to head back out to look at more real estate. I can't wait to return and spend more time enjoying this restaurant.

Over the years we have always enjoyed going to the Thunder Bay Inn for dinner - especially for the fish on Friday. We took friends on Friday during Labor Day weekend - no fish available! The recent owners changed the menu and quite frankly it's disappointing. What's up with all the Mexican dishes? Be original, make it local . . . until something changes I don't intend to go back.

We enjoyed this old Inn that is being refreshed gradually. The owners are running the Pub and Inn and have a fine restaurant going and are updating the inn portion. This is a place to sit on the porch and visit and go down to the public beautiful beach on Lake Superior. Biking or hiking and enjoying the UP are the best things to do here. The rooms with sinks, toilets and furniture are old, but the beds are comfortable. Some rooms have shared baths/showers. It is not AC, but fans and generally the breeze off the lake make it comfortable. The new owners (5 yrs?) have made the pub the best place in this small village for meals and I can see this happening in the Inn over time. We enjoyed the stay and the owners and would return if we are in Big Bay again.

We did not stay at this hotel, but wish we had. We did eat at the restaurant three times as it's the only place to eat in Big Bay unless you want bar food.

The burgers or taco options are best here; the salads are also fresh, but come with packaged dressings. The pizza dough is not doughy but hard, and while they are homemade and fresh, the cheese is tasteless (not unusual up here), so get a topping. Good soups, as well, which are the only low-fat options aside from the salads.

The service is excellent, the best we had in the U.P., or in Chicago for that matter. Prompt, friendly, professional. The restaurant is obviously a place for locals as well as tourists so it has a nice vibe. In the unusual heat, it was airy and cool. While the bar and restaurant are all-in-one, the place is surprisingly quiet.

We didn't stay at the inn (but it is really cute and I would love to some time). However, we did eat at the restaurant and the food was great. The dining area is casual and just plain fun atmosphere. Had photo wall of Jimmy Stewart movie filmed there which was interesting. Would definitely eat there again if ever in area.
