“Not fancy but comfortable”
Reviewed February 8, 2014

This is comfortable and clean. There's a free continental breakfast in the morning, which is a nice touch for a non-chain hotel. The sales contact, Kati Loiselle, knew about a problem I had a few years ago with a missing ground plug, and she made sure it didn't happen again. The room was set up right and easy for my participants to access. The snow removal was pretty good, given a record snowfall and cold temps.

Room Tip: This place is generally pretty quiet and set back off the main road. You should find it comfortable...

I read an article once by a renowned wine expert in which he stated that the most memorable wine he's ever tasted was a popular, cheap jug wine. He wouldn't reveal the brand because, he admitted, what made the wine so memorable was the company of old friends who had shared that wine with him one evening. Bay Valley Resort hosts groups and we were part of one for two nights. It will always be a fond memory. The staff at the resort was accommodating, the bar friendly and the banquet was tasty. The facility however is dated, from the seventies? The rooms are musty, I'm tempted to say from very ancient cigarette smoke, but they definitely are over due for new furnishings. When I tried to move the desk chair in our room the arm came off in my hand. Noise from parties does carry into the hotel section, if you're not at the late party you will hear it. The breakfast bar: hot food is extra and worth it, the breakfast area is staffed by one lonely, overworked person, crumbs and food debris are everywhere, be prepared to wipe down your table. Good memories if your with the right people. Otherwise?

After golfing in the Gaylord, Michigan area we headed back south and stayed at the Bay Valley Hotel & Resort for a couple of days, just outside of Bay City We had been disappointed with our previous accommodations, and the Bay Valley Resort pleased us.

The staff at check-in were very helpful and answered all our questions. Our room was very clean, had two queen beds that were very comfortable, and a nice sized bathroom that was also very clean. A little bar fridge would have been appreciated - there was certainly a large piece of furniture under the TV that could have accommodated one. We asked if there were any rooms with a balcony so we could sit in the fresh air - but they don't have any with outdoor seating and also queen beds - ok, but that seems a bit unusual.

The hotel lobby is very nice and spacious; the bar/restaurant area quite large and accommodating for the post-golf drinks. We had lunch at the bar, and the bar food sandwiches were quite good, but the bartender serving us wasn't particularly friendly even though there was almost no one in the place.

The hotel includes a continental breakfast - cereal, yogurt, toast, granola, hard boiled eggs; not much fruit, which would have been a nice addition. One morning, the eating area tables were almost completely full of dirty dishes, and it was hard to find a clean spot to sit down - they need someone to clear the tables.

The hotel has a very nice pool area - the pool is very clean with lots of lounge chairs. It's very relaxing to enjoy pool-side after a round of golf. But the hot tub jets weren't working, with no sign explaining why or when it would be fixed. Pool side towels were provided, but on the small size.

Their on-site golf course is nice, but there are a couple of weird holes (eg. a strange dog leg requiring a very short first shot). It's easily walkable, which we enjoy. The course is well maintained, and the staff in the clubhouse are very nice and friendly.

It seems strange that there are no maps available for nearby Bay City, or material at the desk for local activities in Bay City or the surrounding area though - they don't get enough out-of-towners for this type of material? The staff try to describe how to get to places, but it would be much easier with a map. Also, they don't have very many suggestions for nearby restaurants, or local entertainment.

All in all, a nice resort, very clean, friendly staff who try to help out, and a nice golf course.

Room Tip: It would be nice to have one of the rooms at the back of the hotel, looking out over the golf course...

We stayed at Bay Valley twice last month when passing through town on a long flight in a private aircraft. On the second stop, we recommended the place to another flight crew who also ended up staying there. The folks here were very accomodating and the rooms were very nice and were clean and in good condition. The included breakfast was very good as were the other meals that we had there. I can't comment on the golf but the overall setting was very pleasent. I understand this property is under fairly new management so take care with older reviews (more than a year or so), they might not apply. Chatting with the staff gae the impression that the new owners were working hard to get things right.

This was our second stay at Bay Valley Resort. The location, golf course and price made it an easy decision to go again.
We travelled from Kitchener Ontario, crossed at Sarnia and headed for Birch Run to do some shopping. A short drive up the Interstate gets you to the resort.
We stayed on the 3rd floor, nice rooms, tall sloped ceilings, king bed and a small but clean bathroom. Flat screen TV and nice furniture.
The service was excellent, the staff are great !
Some people have said the resort is tired or not up to their expectations, the resort is more of a lodge so do not expect a 5 star hotel, that said, the resort is a great place to stay.
The golf course is very nice and in good condition, lots of water to contend with and some very challenging holes. Would go again.

We stayed at this location back 5 or 6 years ago when I could have written a favourable review however this property has slipped downhill in a terrible way. The building is showing wear as well as the rooms with beat up furniture, worn carpet, dirty halls, just an over all disappointment.
The staff are also very poorly trained, when spoken to about an issue they refer you to a comment card rather than taking responsibility for an issue.
The pool on Sunday is not only for quests but for Staff & Family so our experience to sit and relax in a quiet area was more than disappointing with children running, screaming and just being inconsiderate to other paying guests.
Without being informed the dinning room closes on Sunday nights at 8:00 PM so we again were disappointed and had to find alternative source for supper since we showed up at 8:10 PM to find the kitchen was closed.
We had reserved a King Bed Suite but when we arrived the room as my wife and another couple traveling with us all agreed was "Very Creepy" so we changed to a regular room with a King bed. The staff told me they could not change the rate that day, and that it could be done the next day on Monday when management were available. I spoke with the GM and she assured me she would look after the charges for our room. So far it has not been done. Now we know why the staff are so poorly trained when a GM cannot live up to her own word!! - should we fill out a comment card???

I have been going to Bay Valley for years and have watched it change hands many times. The golf course is challenging, and after a change in ownership again, seems to be going in the right direction. Yes, the hotel is older but they are updating the rooms as well as remodeling the entire complex, which is why we decided on having the wedding/reception there. We were not disappointed! The staff was great, the food excellent, and the wedding and reception was one to remember. All 250 guests were comfortable in the newly remodeled reception area, there was plenty of room, and we didn't want for anything. Here's a BIG shout out to Bay Valley, and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of having a wedding there...........
