“Never Again!”

The service was terrible and the drinks were horrendous! The food was mediocre and the place was louder than loud. As I stated in the beginning, never again.

“THE WORST SERVICE EVER”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2011

I wish i can give them less than one star. The worst dinner experience ever. The food was good but the waiter made our dinner horrible. His attitude, lack of respect, negligence, and ignorance was intolerable I had to write a review about it.
Started from ignoring us since we sat down, then came by to take half the order then left, 5 minutes later he comes back with half the drinks then to take the rest of the order and to go back to get the rest of the drinks. He neglected the ladies who was with us, then was dealing with our kids as if they were an infection that he wanted to get rid of. Bottom line if your lady or have kids don’t go there otherwise you will go home hungry. THE WORST SERVICE EVER.

“Worst Service!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2010

After waiting 20 minutes for someone to even take our drink order, we decided to leave. The bartender and waitstaff were extremley rude! Have had the food there before and it isn't the greatest. Do yourself a favor and head about a mile down the road to Chumlees, excellent food, service and the people are very friendly

“Not the best Chinese food. Great drinks.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2010

The drinks here are Strrrrrrrooooooooonnnnnnggg!!! They smell like lighter fluid and taste like fruit mixed with gasoline. However, a couple of these and you won't even notice that the food isn't that great. Its not the worst Chinese food I've ever had ... but far from the best.

The staples are the traditional greasy, fried Chinese takeout specials ... only there are tables. Boneless spareribs are basically overcooked pieces of blackened pink pork that glisten with grease. The chicken fingers are usually a little overcooked. Fairly crispy with brown rather than yellow coating. The bbq beef sticks are way too sweet tasting and look like the same cut of beef used to make beef jerkey that is sold in bags at walmart. You won't be wowed by the food or the atmosphere but something about this place just feels comfortable and you feel like you belong.

Inside, it looks like an 80's Chinese restaurant ... bland white walls, lots of fake brass ... cheesy fake plants and trees and furniture that looks like it came right out of a buffet. Add a casino carpet and scratch ticket machines next to the bar and you have a very underwhelming environment for Shrewsbury Street, where most restaurants go out of their way to attempt to make their place look decent.

So why am I not totally hating on this restaurant when I could name about a dozen better Chinese restaurants in a 4 mile radius? There is just something about this place that feels good. Maybe its the fact that it is seldom crowded and it is laid back. It is full of locals who go there often. The food isn't bad but it isn't good but it is priced just right. If you asked if I'd rather go to Nancy Chang's I'd of course say yes. However, when I am on Shrewsbury Street and I get a taste for what is probably the worst food for you ... I go to the Red Lantern and slum it. Two of the drinks will have you feeling light on your feet. Three and you very realistically may wind up passing out. You won't feel your best the next morning because the drinks are most likely made with 151, but at least at the time you were having fun.

I'd recommend this restaurant if you are passing through Shrewsbury Street but wouldn't go out of you way to go here. Its not really remarkable in any sense of the word but if you like traditional Chinese take out type of food, you probably won't be dissapointed. There is also an outdoor patio area that is an interesting attempt. There are plastic tables and chairs and a tent style thing ... but nobody really eats outside.

“One of the better Chinese places I have found.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 20, 2009

We order in from Red Lantern sometimes. It's a little more expensive than your average chinese takeout, but the food is better. Stay away from the fake chicken, but otherwise I don't think you can go wrong. The seafood is great.
