“Surprisingly good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2009

I travel a lot. Let me say that first. I stay at resorts and world-class business hotels. So, when my wife and I head off into the hills we often put all that behind us and book a simple place that has amenities we want: pool, wireless, decent room, breakfast. So, when I could grab this place for about $90 a night in mid-summer we jumped. A place we stayed at a year or two earlier was twice the price and all one got was more ye olde New England atmosphere.

The hotel was sparkling clean, it had a beautiful and well maintained pool, the wireless worked (I wish I could say that all the many Marriotts and Hiltons I've stayed at lately), and though the free breakfast selection wasn't brilliant, it was enough to get us started. The large fridge and microwave in the room were welcome.

Sure, quibbles. Our room wasn't made up when we arrived, but we were quickly given a better one. Our keys ran out a day early, but that was easily fixed. The staff was friendly.

We'd go back. The money we saved was well spent in some fine local restaurants.

The location is convenient enough only one mile from Williams College. The room looked shabby. When I first walked in and turned on the light switch at night, nothing came on. I had to stumble into the room and turn on one of the lamps. It turns out the switch is linked to one of the lamps on the table, which I had to turn on myself. The lights were so dark it was depressing to be in the room. At night the room was freezing, and it was a weekend in February where the temp that day and the next day was 40s. There was no thermostat to turn the heat higher.
My room was next to the staff parking, and at night and in the morning there were loud noises of cars/trucks pulling in and out and staff talking.

We ended up staying here because there was no other place available that we could afford. We checked in early afternoon and the place smelled. We opened the windows, put on the fan, and went out for the rest of the day. When we returned hours later, it still smelled bad, but was bearable. Also, the place was filthy - dirt and hairs everywhere, something that looked like splattered chocolate sauce on the wall. I would definitely not recommend this place. They say "newly renovated," but don't believe it.

The Howard Johnson staff was very friendly. We were lost on a back country rd, (we actually ended up in NY State), and the gentelman at the desk was able to guide us back on track and get us to the hotel.

When we arrived we were a little stressed and the kids were acting up. Check in was a snap, (Thank God), and we got a great resteraunt recomendation from the desk agent.

The room was exactly what was advertised and we really enjoyed our journey to the Berkshires. Mount Greylock is a must!

  • Liked — The mountain views and the comfortable beds. Room was very clean.
  • Disliked — Nothing.....a great trip

Complained to desk that room smelled. They gave me 2 options. 1. Another room non-smoking or my money back. Left a few minutes and went back to desk for a credit. Asked front desk to explain on credit slip why I'm getting a credit. Within 2 minutes the POLICE showed up.

I've have stay in this motel many times because its close to the college and they have a smoking room. When we checked in right away I put the a/c because the smell was realy bad. 5 hours later it was still bad and then I went to the front desk. Front desk didn't even go into the room.

Will NEVER stay here again. BEWARE!

We booked the Howard Johnson Hotel since it was a football weekend at WIlliams College and a lot of the hotels were full. It was an ok experience. We stayed in a part of the hotel that has been renovated, and the beds were new. The front desk was extremely cordial and willing to please. He said "Check out the room and if you are not happy with it, we are willing to put you in another." We did not partake of their breakfast, there is a little place near by called the Moonlight Diner that has a great breakfast...one we went to often when our son was a student at Williams College. Our son and his wife and baby stayed in the adjoining room and we could hear the baby cry when he woke up....and I expect if there was a rowdy party in that room, we would have been able to hear it since there was not much noise insulation. Also, the baby crib was obviously new with a new mattress which was a plus. All and all, it was a fine place to stay...not fancy, but clean and comfotable and handy to the college and reasonably priced.

  • Liked — Clean and comfortable
  • Disliked — I am a 5 star girl and this was not 5 star, but it was what was available

We ended upstairs in the back building. The room is a bit dated, but the mattress was quite good and the pool (away from the main drag) was quite nice. They could step up the continental breakfast a bit, but the HoJo is a good value.

  • Liked — location and mattress!
  • Disliked — sparse continental breakfast
