Howard Johnson Williamstown

We ended upstairs in the back building. The room is a bit dated, but the mattress was quite good and the pool (away from the main drag) was quite nice. They could step up the continental breakfast a bit, but the HoJo is a good value.

We are not HJ fans (not that we have stayed in many HJs but we have read many negative reviews over the years that ‘put you off’). However this was the best ‘coupon’ buy in Williamstown at a total cost of $60.30 (at that price you don’t expect too much!). We could have even have got a cheaper room but wanted a microwave.

We were placed in a newer unit on ground floor level, right side of the property. Our one window looked out to the rear (pool side). The room was spacious with a safe, microwave, fridge, lots of drawer and hanging space, a desk, easy chair and ottoman and it has good lighting. The heater/cooler kept us warm. The bathroom was okay, the hot water took forever to flow hot but once it arrived it was fine. The shower over the bath had a nice gentle flow. An extra pillow was supplied on request. The unit was very clean and the gardens around the motel very tidy (see photo).

Other motel occupants appeared to be ‘semi permanent’ workmen, some sitting out on upper decks, drinking, smoking etc. Not the nicest atmosphere and overnight some car and voice noise, it was a Friday night. No one bothered us at all.

Breakfast in the rundown dining room by the Reception was better than expected. Basic muffins make your own waffles, cereals – choice of two, fruit juice – choice of two. For what we were paying we considered it very good.

Williamstown was a pleasant town with attractive college buildings and churches. W were there to visit the Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute – wonderful, don’t miss it.

The rooms were 1970s decor, the outside seedy, and the air conditioner barely worked. To top it off a bunch of teenage guys were sitting outside their room a few doors down drinking and smoking and eying my teenage daughter. When I told the manager that I did not think it was appropriate to subject other hotel guests to this kind of behavior, he didn't tell the kids to move it inside but instead stuck me in another building.

We needed a place to stay in the area for one night and this place had the lowest rates, using my NEA discount.

I booked room with a queen bed but ended up with a room with a king bed in their new wing. It was a large, clean, and well maintained room. We were very satisfied. The only disappointments were the pathetic continental breakfast. I went 1/4 mile down the road to Dunkin D's. Also, there was only a shower and no tub.

For a discount chain, this was a good one. However, I have read that the rates go into triple digits in the summer, which would be a rip-off

Pulling up to the Howard Johnson Williamstown, you notice right away that there is not enough attention paid to the appearence of the hotel. The grass was near a foot high, and there were many dead flowers surrounding it. Check in was quick, and we arrived at a somewhat large room on the second floor. The bathroom was very small with a shower that had poor water pressure. The green carpet of the room was old, and had many stains. The view out the back window was nice, as Williamstown is surrounded by the Berkshires. However, there was a house directly behind the hotel that we were staring into, and they could obviously see into our room, so the curtains needed to be shut at all times. The pool was very nice, with a beautiful fountain that was not working, but it had not been cleaned recently and there were many dead insects inside, almost to a point where it was unbearable. The beds were somewhat comfortable. The TV gets very few channels. The two armchairs that they provide were extremely worn and uncomfortable.
Overall, I would say the Howard Johnson is exactly what you would expect from looking at it. Although at $89 per night, it is fairly cheap and an okay value.

Grounds need grooming, halls need cleaning, room needs vacuuming. Cleanliness is the most important item considered when staying in a motel, and it is not very important to the management at this establishment. A large cob web near the door greeted us as we entered our room. The continental breakfast is practically non-existent. A couple of English muffins, half a dozen stale pastries and muffins, and 1 airpot of coffee. Your second warning something may not be good is the fact that they hit your credit card for your stay in its entirety upon check-in, and provide no invoice at any time.

My husband and three teenage sons and I stayed at this hotel this past weekend. The picture online makes the hotel look quaint, but this is not the reality. It actually looks run-down and I may even venture to say "seedy." We had booked a room with two double beds online, but when we got there were given a tiny room with one double bed. My husband went down and they assigned us a new room, but then we were told that the roll-away bed we had requested online was not available. The thermostat in each of these rooms was set to 48 degrees. so it was cold when we got there! We soon discovered that most of the outlets were not working (a problem for things like cell phones that need to charge and lamps...). The next morning, the hair dryer would not work and they did not have a portable one for use in such situations, AND I had to repair the ironing board in order to use it! It fell apart when I took it off its hook. The shower put out hot water, then terribly cold water in the middle of the shower, and when you tried to warm it by turning the handle, the water became scalding hot! And...finally..."continental breakfast" was a choice of tiny muffins or English muffins with coffee or juice. I have never complained before about a hotel and don't consider myself hard to please, but the $70 this one cost was not remotely worth the dollars saved by not spending a little more!!!!
