The 1896 House Country Inn - Brookside & Pondside
Ranked #9 of 13 Hotels in Williamstown
Reviewed June 1, 2013

My husband and I spent our anniversary at the 1896 House and everything was absolutely fantastic. We spent 2 nights in one of the barnside suites with a gas fireplace, great furnishings and we just loved the tub. I would highly recommend it to everyone. The breakfasts were great too.

We spent a recent weekend at this motel for a local graduation. We reserved 3 rooms in the Brookside motel. Loved the location hidden from the road. We sat at the tables outside and were able to visit with family members between festivities. We had dinner at the '6 Pub right next door and could walk to and from dinner. The rooms were rustic but clean and well-equipped. The inn keepers were friendly and accommodating. It was quiet at night and a full breakfast was served at the Pub each morning for motel guests only.

Room Tip: Rooms at Brookside are more private and same hidden from view. Also next to office and restaurant.

Our stay was delightful. We relaxed for a couple hours sitting under the trees by the brook watching the birds at the feeders near the office. A very peaceful setting even though the road is actually quit close. Our room was very clean and comfortable and wonderfully decorated with county charm. We opened the window that faced out toward the trees in the back and enjoyed the cool, fresh air.

Room Tip: We liked the Brookside location because the brook actually buffers the sound of the nearby road.

The suite at the 1896 house was wonderful. It was clean, bed comfortable and the Jacuzzi worked well. The breakfast provided was very well prepared and was delicious and the restaurant that is on site had great food!

After reading the reviews on Tripadvisor, we were really excited to stay here, but overall, we found it average. It is basically the same as a chain hotel.

If you are looking for a good deal and want a clean room, you will not be disappointed. (Although I am not sure that the other B&Bs listed are that much more expensive.) We expected more since it was listed under B&B. We booked a King deluxe room, which was supposed to have a two person jacuzzi. Only the short and petite could make that a comfortable tub for two. It was nice for one until the hot water ran out before it was full. Don't waste your money on the upgrade.

There was not much of a B&B atmosphere. The room was rather dark, the parlor stove was electric -- fine, but not really anything to get excited about. The bed was fine.

The breakfast was a big disappointment. We expected local B&B fare, but it was the same you get at the Comfort Inn. Bread, grocery bagels, boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, the bacon that is pre-cooked I think, grocery store coffee cake, juice, wafflemaker, coffee and Lipton tea. The best part was that there was a tip jar for the chef. All he prepared was eggs and bacon. (Really?)

The cheesiest thing was that the property was covered in fake flowers. The real daffodils were cute. Why add the fakes?

If you want a clean room, this is a good deal -- you can stay for under $100 in the off season, just do not expect a special experience.

The staff was very nice and friendly.

Room Tip: No idea. All the places are on the highway.

It is unfortunate that this guest elected to stay in one of our motels and expected a B&B experience. Although our motels do offer a full breakfast, we do not advertise them as a B&B. Our B&B which is our Barnside building, receives only rave reviews, and would offer what this guest had hoped for, along with a gourmet breakfast. Our B&B and our Motels cannot be compared. It is important to know that the guest selects the room type and the building, and it is usually related to the rate.
Our web site describes all 3 of our properties, Brookside Motel ( where this guest stayed), Pondside Motel, and Barnside Inn, along with photos, and the respective complimentary breakfast that comes with each property. Our motels offer exceptional cleanliness, local character, and a full hot breakfast buffet at an affordable price. They are a great value. Most guests who expect a motel experience and stay with us are very happy, as our Tripadvisor reviews attest.
Although our motels may offer a breakfast that is similar to chain hotels, we are the only motel offering a full breakfast in the entire area.
The Jacuzzis in our rooms are manufactured and sold as "dual" tubs. Everyone may have a different perception of what that might be, but no one has ever negatively mentioned anything about the tubs before, and most people comment positively on them.
Some people may not know that we in the Berkshires are advised not to plant annuals until Memorial Day for fear of frost and even snow in late May. For this reason, we do place seasonal but realistic fake flowers in the pots along our porches, as we find it preferable for our guests to have something colorful to look at rather than dirt in the pots that some guests use as ashtrays. I agree that fake flowers can be tacky, but the ones we use are very realistic. Come Memorial Day, we spend hundreds of dollars on fresh annuals and fill not only our porch pots, but we hang flowering pots from all of our posts, & fill all of our bridge and pool containers with beautiful real flowers. We also have perennial beds dotted along the property which were coming into bloom while this guest stayed with us.
We entreat our future guests to examine our website, and if confused, our staff is most happy to explain the differences among our properties.

My daughter and I stayed here for just one night while visiting Williams College (2 miles away). The room was very clean and comfortable. Bathroom was very spacious and it seems it was remodeled just recently. Even though this motel is off the road, the rooms are very quiet and we could not hear a thing at night.

Breakfast is served in a spacious restaurant and it had a large enough variety to get going. Nice great and a great value!

Though it looks like a typical .50's motel from the outside, the rooms are great. Dark knotty pine walls, spacious, with nice clean carpet. Our room had a king 4-poster bed and a jacuzzi tub/shower. Convenient location near Williams College, and a complimentary hot full breakfast buffet at the pub next door. I'd stay here any time.
