Description: State Road opened in 2009 in the agricultural town West Tisbury on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Our interiors were designed by Michael S. Smith. Michael appointed unique American antiques throughout the restaurant and called on regional craftsman and artisans to create a warm and inviting contemporary tavern. In 2010 we planted herb, fruit and vegetable gardens on our grounds. We harvest from the gardens daily for our seasonally focused menus.

This is our 4th visit to this restaurant - twice we walked away thinking it was terrific and twice just good. Hard to put our finger on what makes the difference since the menu over the last 3 years is basically the same. As an example, last year the lobster salad was exceptional. This year, though the exact same ingredients, the lobster was almost tasteless. My husband's spice rubbed monkfish was absolutely delicious as was the corn soup. The cauliflower fritters, which we had loved last year as well, were good but not great. Having been to the building in 3 different iterations, the current restaurant has done an amazing job with the space - elegant but warm and comfortable. Service is top notch. It used to be BYOB but can now serve wine and beer. Prices are very steep. On one of the nights that have been exceptional, its been worth it. On others, not so much. We're debating whether to take the chance again when we return to the Island next month. Maybe we'll wait til next year...

If you wish to eat here plan ahead as this place books up fast. The best we could get was an early evening reservation which turned out just fine.
The food and service was outstanding. There was enough variety on the menu to satisfy anyones palate.
We shall return.

Very limited menu. We were with a local who had recommended the Resturant and when we enquired as to where the proper lunch menu was, the waiter apologised and said everyone was complaining about it. Service was awful. As each one of us finished, the plated was snatched away, instead of waiting for us all to finish. The bill arrived before the last plate was cleared and before we had ordered deserts or coffee. They were in a rush to get us out. Not recommended for lunch

We had heard so much about this restaurant- we do our homework where restaurants are concerned-it's reputation preceded it, and that's where it stayed. Salad and soup were very good, but that's where it ended. The chicken was simply a seasoned skin on a roasted 1/4, dry, bland bird. My husband's exceptionally expensive steak was not only tough, but fairly tasteless, and my daughter's hamburger was nothing special. To be fair, some of the accompaniments were good ( the gnocchi with my chicken specifically), but nothing to warrant the reputation and prices. We noticed the people at the next table leaving over their steak and chicken also.

On a different note - being known for farm-to-table and amazing herb gardens in front, we were shocked to find ourselves standing in utter blackness waiting for our taxi for the ride back to our hotel. They have absolutely no lighting outside!

We headed down-island on a Sunday night in Summer. First mistake. No parking to be found anywhere, and the restaurant we had expected to visit was unexpectedly closed this night..so we headed back up-island and decided to try sitting at the bar at State Rd. (we knew there'd be no chance of getting a table...they're always booked). Only 6 seats at the bar...stool style...but the experience was very nice. Wine and beer only, and some creative faux cocktails. Affable bartender and staff, quick service, nice glass of wine, cheese board and clam fritters...and we're happy campers. We'll go again..this is one of our favorite venues, and now we have another reason to say State Rd. is still at the top of our list.
