Description: State Road opened in 2009 in the agricultural town West Tisbury on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Our interiors were designed by Michael S. Smith. Michael appointed unique American antiques throughout the restaurant and called on regional craftsman and artisans to create a warm and inviting contemporary tavern. In 2010 we planted herb, fruit and vegetable gardens on our grounds. We harvest from the gardens daily for our seasonally focused menus.

We went to State Road restaurant based on the great reviews and could not have been more disappointed. Firstly, it is extremely dark - so dark that I could barely read the menu or the bill. The man on the table next to me had to use a torch to read the menu, so it was like dining during a power cut. Secondly, the acoustics were terrible and it was extremely noisy. Thirdly, my food
was so salty it was inedible. I never complain in restaurants but I had to send it back. When a new portion was delivered the vegetables were still drowning in salt. On the upside, the staff were delightful but I would never eat there again.

I ordered a monkfish and never had a monkfish like this. It was softly cooked and came with fresh and crispy vegetables. Good cooking and pleasant service.

This restaurant, located in rural West Tisbury, perfectly reflects the odd combination of uber-rich refinement and salt-crusted Yankee ruggedness that defines Martha’s Vineyard. It took a little work to get there for our 8:30 dinner reservation. There are no streetlights on the State Road, and the restaurant looks pretty much like every other gray-shingled building on the island, especially in the dark. The sign near the street is lit but not the driveway or parking lot in the back (more of a meadow, actually). The good news is that once you find you way inside, the experience is worth the effort.

The dining room has a vaulted ceiling and is decorated like a Quaker meeting house; the overall feel is very simple elegance. And while the décor might suggest Pilgrims, you can be sure those early settlers never ate like this. The focus here is squarely on the food, locally sourced and prepared with care. The menu is date-stamped, apparently tailored to the seasonal availability of offerings from local suppliers. The bread was fresh, the appetizers and entrees were excellent. Soup, salads, vegetables, seafood, beef, and duck, all were interesting recipes, nicely presented, and delicious. A nice list of domestic wines and an interesting collection of beer choices and wine-by-the-glass complemented the food. We often skip dessert after dinner, but State Road’s dessert menu was absolutely compelling, one of the best I’ve seen, so we had to indulge. Excellent decision. As good the other courses were, dessert was probably the best. Ranging from cobbler, cakes and gelato desserts to cheeses and custom chocolate bars, the selection was tuned to the current season and the choices were a satisfying end to a fine meal.

Other reviewers have commented on spotty service. My experience was okay – not the most crisp, or meticulous I’ve seen, but certainly acceptable. It seemed pretty consistent with higher-end restaurants in large cities. The same is true of the menu prices: you’re located in the Martha’s Vineyard countryside but the menu looks like New York ($70-100 per person with wine and dessert). Overall, my dinner foursome was very happy with State Road, and it's at the top of our list for a return visit. If you’re looking for a fine dining experience, this is surely among the top options on the Vineyard.

We've been coming to State Road for many years now, and, in my opinion, it's still, hands down, the best restaurant on island. The food really "pops," and we have never, ever, had a "bad" or even "mediocre" meal here. While each and every course may not be "to die for," at least two out of three, if not all components of the meal (e.g., appetizer, main course, dessert) are memorable. The quahog fritters are a terrific starter to share, and they are a must. The locally-based menus change regularly -- we've had excellent meat and fish courses here. On our most recent visit, our sea bass entrees were excellent, and the s'mores dessert and the pineapple carrot cake were "over the top" outstanding. There are reasonable, and terrific wines, by the bottle and glass. Yes, it is a pricey restaurant, but the costs are not out of line with other "fine" Vineyard restaurants (although it is a bit startling to see fluke and monkfish entrees priced at $37 each -- here, or "anywhere"). And, like most Vineyard restaurants, from upscale to fish shacks, the service can be hit or miss, e.g., while our waiter was friendly and informative about the menu, he forgot to bring us bread (we ended up asking for it -- because it's delicious -- and well worth the "carb splurge"). Another server seemed flustered, and dropped (clean) tableware on my lap by accident (she was apologetic). And our table has never been ready upon our arrival -- we always end up waiting to be seated for at least a few minutes. It's also always crowded and "loud." Nevertheless, we have sent many happy friends here over the years, and our teenagers love this restaurant, as well, as a "family splurge." So: make your reservations in advance of your vacation arrival and be prepared to be delighted, with possibly a few service "hiccups." Enjoy!!

State Road was a fantastic find. We had a superb dinner there two nights ago and found both the food and the service amazing. Yes, it's pricey, but that is true of everything on the island, and this restaurant was worth it. They also have a great wine list and many good ones available by the glass.
