“Good food, interesting ambiance”

My first visit to Rouge in West Stockbridge was a winner. The building and decor are charming. The menu ( we sat in the back) was creative and offered a variety pleasing to many of varied preferences. I had a halibut special. Tasted like the fish came from the water within minutes, very fresh. Presentation, a big slab of white fish over white rice, was unappealing but the flavor couldn't be beat. The jasmine rice and the sautéed summer vegetables were tasty. Dessert, a frozen espresso cake was nothing special, but the accompanying scoop of chocolate gelato was yummy. Service was friendly, at times slightly intrusive.

“French attitude that comes with a high price.”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

Rude staff, long waits, food that you have to send back best describes Rouge. Also they refuse to cook you meat to your choice. Also the place is very tight so you be crammed into a small space. . Don't waste your time or money. You will leave more frustrated than happy.

“My new favorite restaurant”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

Restaurant has been here for 10 years informs waitress. We used to eat at Bruschettas which was great and Trunks but never tried Rouge before. Stopped on the way to Tanglewood. Lost our res but got in anyway though quite busy since the Zucchini Festival was taking place right outside. Started with a cocktail from menu, Rouge Royal, some Cosmo and Manhattan. Moved on to oysters, brochette of escargot (grilled), and an excellent salad. Our waitress works the farms where the awesome vegies are from. Good work. Entrees ?crusted rack of lamb, Dover sole and Steak au poivre/frites. Good bistro standards and well done. Had the most excellent Brunello. Ordered profiteroles for dessert which was good but not great. Everything else was excellent and we cannot wait to return.

“The Best in the Berkshires”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

We love the food, the atmosphere, the friendly owners and
the overall great experience we have every time we visit this
great French restaurant in West Stockbridge.
Duck is a great choice available in multiple ways but you must
leave room for the great desserts and special salads that open
or close the meal.
Reservations are a must on weekends in the summer (4 or more)
but you can usually find a place at the bar ara with a great special menu.

“Rhapsody in Rouge”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

Restoring castles in the South of France. That’s how they met. A marriage made in fantasy land. Luckily for us the magic continues on an unpretentious side street in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts: Rouge (Restaurant & Bistro). Think the color and you’ve got it. All heart. Rose, twinkling red lights, a wonderful buzz that envelopes all who enter. That buzz would be Maggie, wife of William. She is the charming hostess, he’s the French chef. It’s not just the ambiance that we go for. It’s the food. Every weekend finds us there, biting into the supreme comfort of a Rouge burger, or bringing weekend guests for their reinvented tapas plates (think French ) of green beans, onions, and almonds, Kale gratin, “asperge” with roasted garlic, Nigerian tiger shrimp in Provencal sauce. Last night, en route to Tanglewood, we stopped for supper. In tribute to Julia Child’s 100th birthday, William had made Osso Bucco. It was divine, a concoction that made my husband’s eyebrows rise, the sign that confers “this is unbelievable”. I don’t want to forget the wine. Carefully chosen, there’s always an unusual red like the exquisite Chinon Michael had last night.
The wait staff loves it there as much as we do. They’ve been there for years. Always smiling and joking, they seem never to be hassled –even when they are balancing martinis in each hand, filled to the brim. If you are really lucky sometimes there’s an entire party of Tanglewood stars filling the back room. A couple of weeks ago, Stephanie Blythe passed our table with her entourage. I was waiting for an aria to begin..
One more thing.. we never eat dessert. Last night when Molly, our waitress told us about the sponge cake layered with crème fraiche and raspberry kirsch , topped with poached pears, we caved. It was an enormous piece and it was irresistible.
Why I’m writing this, I don’t know. It’s a gem of a place that I’d like to keep secret.
But Maggie and William have generously shared their talents, so if you find yourself on this wee little street, do stop for supper. It’s glorious.
