“Best Gem and Mineral Show!!”
Review of The Big E

I went to the Big-E for their Gem and Mineral Show and was absolutely amazed!! The mineral dealers are from around the world and they bring one amazing piece after another. You can buy jewelry, gemstones, minerals as well as sit in on a speaker to hear about how exactly minerals are found and the lengths they go to obtain them. When I was there a mineral dealer was speaking about caving all over the world and had a wonderful slide show. Even though it is a 3 day show, you will want to get there early and park. If you have kids, they can gold-pan a bag of dirt and see what they found, there is a table there where they can buy toys, or they can choose their own geode and have it cracked open to see what the crystals look like inside. The dealers there will gladly tell you where their minerals are from and answer any question you may have. There are hourly free giveaways, too. I have gone a few years in a row and will absolutely continue to go!!

Its a giant fair, but for older folks who don't feel like riding the amusement rides, it's all about the food. A loaded baked potato is amazing, and if you walk away without some of the Big E cream puffs then you're definitely missing out. Trying to find a parking space can be murder and you had better make sure you bring some extra cash with you.

This is a very big fair with something for everyone, but be prepared to deal with traffic, lines, and generally a horde of people, especially on the weekends.

One of the best events to attend in Central/Western Massachusetts. My husband has been involved in argricultural events forever, but being a city girl it was all new to me. It is getting far more comercialized, but we still have a great time. Check out the sheep dog events and the State Buildings.

I go to the Big E in Springfield every year. It's a great take. I usually book a hotel for the one night I go here. The event runs for about 3 weeks. They have a variety o foods/crafts/music, etc. I especially like walking through the buildings they have, each one named, like Massachusetts/Rhode Island/Connecticut, etc. They sell quite a few items in each of the buildings. The only thing I don't like here is that there are a lot of kids and a lot of carriages that can get into your way. It's no problem walking around anywhere where there are carriages, except for in the buildings. I wish if people were taking their children here that they wouldn't be allowed in the buildings with a carriage. It makes it very tight quarters and hard to menover. Other then that, it is a great take, a nice place to go and have a great time.

The even is usually in September and if you were going to stay overnight at one of the hotels, it is best to call a month or so in advance. The hotels fill up quickly.
