What makes a great place where you go, meet interesting people and talk into the night, see other interesting people at tables near by who come over to talk, and the staff knows you and brings your favorites as soon as you nod? Stellinas. Watertown on Charles. Back Patio in summer, bar in winter. Best ever.

We have been to Stellina twice now, once when we first moved to the Boston area and again recently for a special occasion. We noticed on the 2nd visit that the ambiance isn't nearly as romantic if is still light outside (summertime, so longer days). Of course, we didn't expect top level of ambiance, as it's obvious the busy traffic of downtown Watertown Sq is right outside the window, but we had just remembered our first impression was much better as everything is more romantic in the dark with candles :)The food is the star of this restaurant as compared to any other aspect of the dining experience (service, price, atmosphere, etc). Try a dish with figs or whatever seems to be unique, and you won't be disappointed. The food was consistently top notch both times we went to Stellina. The wait staff was nothing special; not rude, but seemingly not working for tips either. The service we got almost seemed like diner service in terms of just providing the menus and taking orders (not going to any effort to be friendly, tell us about specials, or check on us periodically). We'd go again for sure, but I think we'd head to the North End for a special occasion before trying this restaurant for that sort of thing again.

I'd heard such wonderful things about Stellina from friends and colleagues for years, but just never got around to going. Finally did and while it's a decent enough place to grab a glass of wine after work (they have a jazz trio there some weeknights), the dining experience left a little to be desired. The food was okay (had the pumpkin ravioli) but didn't think it was worth the price. Much better food down the street at The Talk. Bar area is cramped too...they have small two-seater tables right next to the bar and if you're sitting at the bar, a waitress or customer will no doubt knock into you as they're walking by. The staff is nice and professional, but for me, this is a drinks only place.

I love the food at Stellina's and often have the grilled chicken panini. They also have excellent soups and salads, including a delicious warm tomato and goat cheese salad. The outdoor seating area is lovely in warm weather and the service is always great.

We hadn't been to Stellina's in a few years and my husband requested it for his special birthday dinner. We debated whether to enjoy the jazz ensemble performing inside or enjoy the relaxing ambiance of the garden terrace. We decided on the terrace with its flowers, grape arbor and bubbling fountain...made us forget we were anywhere near a parking lot! Stellina's serves a delicious white bean, pesto spread with 3 different types of breads. 3 of us ordered the sangria and didn't find it recommendable. However, from there on, we can heartily recommend the other dishes we ordered and savored. We began with an appetizer of grilled figs sprinkled with gorganzola, on a bed of arugala and prosciuto. That was followed by 4 different entrees, shared by all and absolutely delicious-pork loin w/ spiced cherries, pasta w/ ground boar, veal marsala, and fettucini w/ mushrooms. We made sure we saved room to share a piece of lemon pound cake topped with blueberries and a fallen chocolate cake with berries and whipped cream...service was professional, and not obtrusive. We were impressed that the offerings were labeled gluten free. Although there were folks dressed very casually and others getting take out, Stellina's will be our special place for dinner!
