The 1720 House
Ranked #5 of 11 Vineyard Haven B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 17, 2008

The 1720 House was gracious and comfortable. We were able to relax from the moment we opened the door to our serene and immaculate room looking out to the harbor. Being in town and taking long walks through the old residential neighborhoods along the water was glorious. We will definitely stay there again.

We had a most wonderful stay at the very attractive and interesting 1720 House on Martha's Vineyard.
The property was immaculate, smelled of cinnamon and nutmeg and pine. Our bed was very comfortable and had great linens.
Breakfast was fresh, coffee with real cream. We were treated to exceptional hospitality. The house is across from the harbor beach and close to town. We were really comfortable there.

The two of us stayed here during Columbus weekend in October for three nights. We booked the Brown Room - Not only was it very brown, but it had large carpet stains, two very hard mattresses ( the bed was a "queen"), and it smelled moldy. We were disgusted when we saw that our shared bathroom with the Blue Room had mold growing on the ceiling of the shower. After confronting the property owner ( she does not live on-site), we stayed in the Red Room. The Red bathroom was...interesting. There is an old antique bathtub for a makeshift shower and the shower curtain was growing mold as well.

Apparently, this B&B is for sale, so the owner is not making any effort to fix up the property before she sells. Bad idea. Oh, and the bike rentals? They don't exist. Good thing we brought our own, although there is no place to store them. The yard out back will have to do if you plan on bringing bikes.

The funniest part was when the only two staff members quit during our stay.

The house also needs a paint job outside and in. There is no breakfast - this is the first B&B where we had to make our own by taking whatever was left in the fridge in their kitchen. The only nice thing about this place was their living room and dining area. Nice furniture, cozy patio/living room....otherwise, this hotel was a bomb. Don't go here! You will be much safer and relaxed at a standard hotel.

My husband and I visited the 1720 House on Martha's Vineyard in the late summer 2008. We were thrilled with our stay: the B&B is sparkling clean, the linens are of the highest quality, and our bed was incredibly comfortable. The whole B&B was lovely, and the charming hostess provided free bicycles so that we could explore the island! We will definitely return and recommend this small, pristine B&B most highly.

Stay away...stay far away‎
We have stayed at over 50 B & Bs so I feel my husband and I are in tune to the B & B experience. By far, this was the worst ever. Here's why: No one was available when we arrived, or for 95% of our stay. There were no menus to peruse to choose a restaurant for dinner. Breakfast was really brown bananas and some cold cereal. The TV only had a few stations, 3 were in Spanish, with NO news channel. The TV cord was stapled up along a corner of the room. We had two bath towels so no towel for drying hair. There was no hairdryer in the room and when I looked in the cabinet for one I found a smelly pair of shoes and a knit top. (Peter did provide one when asked). There were way too many personal/antique items scattered about the room, including an old comb, so there was limited space for our own things. Calling the number on the card left by the front door resulted in No Answer.
We never saw the innkeeper but perhaps that was a good thing - our only conversations with her were on the telephone and she was abrupt and rude. The information said the inn had been "totally renovated for comfort and convenience." What a joke. The floor was uneven, the room was cramped, and paint was peeling off the ceiling and was in pieces on the floor.
I would not recommend 1720 House to anyone. It was definitely NOT worth the huge amount of money we paid. Moreover, it is not indicative of the high-quality accomodation the website would lead one to believe. She gives new meaning to the words "Hospitality Industry." Stay away...far away.

We stayed in the Red Room which the booking websites say has a queen size bed and a TV. The bed was a full or a double (which is listed on the Inn's website). The TV was a portable with about a 4" screen. (I paid more for the queen and a TV, oh well). The website said I would get either the Red Room or the Garden Room (same price). We saw the Garden Room and can't figure out how they could be the same price. The Garden Room is more secluded, has a queen bed, a 12" or so TV, and an attached private bathroom (the Red Room's private bathroom is across the hall). We met the owner Abby the first day and she didn't seem to be a friendly person. We went out to dinner and a movie and returned about 11pm. When my headlights hit the window we saw Abby get up and turn off all the lights in the house and also the outside lights. Very strange, we felt like kids sneaking into the house. The room was clean and the manager Peter was a friendly nice guy......Another strange thing was a collage in the living room (partly concealed behingd the couch and not hanging on a wall). It seemed to be a Lorena Bobbitt (sp) collage, even with a bloody tissue. Why is this in eyesight?

Soon after arrival my friend and I had a nickname for the innkeeper Abby: Cruella. Why does somebody that extremely unfriendly, uncaring and rude open a B&B? And: don't count on the bikes - they are in a very very poor condition and both had flat tires for a couple of days. Only think of booking the blue room (which is sold as a double room) if your are single or have an affinity for closets with a bed. The shared bathroom of the blue and brown room is just terrible, extremely small and disgusting. Our room (we stayed there for a week) wasn't cleaned for three days in a row, but at least we were asked whether we need fresh towels. One night we woke up because we smelled smoke: Abby was sitting in the kitchen, smoking (she's smoking a lot, and yes, she's smoking INSIDE the house, we saw that quite often) and making toast - and the whole house just stunk! On arrival nobody was there, just a key was lying on a desk. And also in the evening nobody showed us around or gave us informations. In general you don't feel welcome - the innkeeper gives the impression that she's just interested in the money you leave. But Peter, the manager, is a really nice guy!
