“GREAT TIME AT 1720 HOUSE”
Reviewed February 9, 2012

We spent a winter weekend on Marthas Vineyard at The 1720 House and loved every minute. The sun shone brightly so it was warm enough to walk along trails and beaches with no crowds. Enough restaurants were open so we ate great food. The B&B served us hot chocolates and brownies and teas in the afternoons. The owner and her associates were helpful with everything we needed and good conversation about the history of the island. They arranged for an island tour for us. We used excellent public transportation to get around...if you bring a car they have ample parking. It's a big THUMBS UP and THANK YOU to The 1720 House

The 1720 House was just right for our family – and our budget. We loved the feeling of staying in a home that was built in the early 18th Century. And, although this quaint B&B has retained its historic character, it still offers amenities like air conditioning, free wi-fi and modern bathrooms. Perhaps the most convenient feature was the location. We got off the ferry, walked a couple of blocks through the village of Vineyard Haven, and the 1720 House is right there, just steps away from shops, restaurants and public transportation. We even got a special off-season rate that was surprisingly affordable for Martha’s Vineyard.

We stayed at the charming 1720 House bed-and-breakfast in the winter, a few days before Christmas. The island was decked out with beautiful holiday lights and was delightfully quiet – none of the traffic or crowded restaurants and beaches of the high season. Our room was warm and cozy, spotlessly clean, and it had a view with a glimpse of the harbor. The hosts were friendly, attentive and helpful with suggestions for touring and nearby restaurants.

The location of the 1720 House is perfect – an easy stroll from the ferry landing, the charming boutiques and restaurants of Main Street, the Stop and Shop, the library, car rentals and just about anything else a visitor would need.

The 1720 House is pure Americana – not some sterile chain hotel or modern bungalow. The original wooden plank floors slope a bit here and there, doorways angle oddly, and the low beams in the living room continue to boldly brace the structure just as they have for the past three centuries. Antique furnishings tastefully decorate the cozy, freshly painted rooms, including six guest suites (three with ensuite bathrooms). Modern amenities include wireless internet, air-conditioning and television (in the living room). History buffs – or anyone who appreciates nostalgia -- will love the experience of staying in such a delightfully preserved home.

We thoroughly enjoyed long walks on the empty beaches in the morning mist, dining on lobster at a nearly-empty restaurant and touring the island to marvel at various examples of Cape Code architecture and occasional grand waterfront estates.

The 1720 House was perfect for our stay – excellent location, reasonable price, comfortable, historically interesting, thoroughly accommodating. We recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Three of the six bedrooms have "ensuite" bathrooms.

This was our first trip to the States and picked the 1720 House from the Internet and we were not disappointed. The house is lovely and the rooms clean and our bed very comfortable. Cheryle was very helpful and accommodating and Continental breakfast was delicious, with plenty of choice for cereal, fruit, yogurt etc. Would definitely recommend the 1720 House.

Room Tip: We stayed in The Lincoln Room which is on the ground floor, if you want ease of access.

I stay at 1720 two or three times a year, combining business and pleasure. The location can't be beat, a 5 minute walk to the Vineyard Haven ferry (and downtown restaurants and shops), when I don't need to bring my car over and parking when I do. The host and her staff are extremely helpful, really in the know about the goings-on on the island and very generous in their time explaining what's what and how to get there.

It's a reasonably small B&B, so one has the feel of being a guest in a home, but plenty of room to spread out, including dining room, living room, porch, back yard with the most amazing ancient tree. Prices are excellent and the place immaculate.

Excellent.

Cheryle was great from start to finish. Our room was ready early. Out bathroom was updated and clean. Breakfast was simple but excellent, with lots of fresh fruit. We used two bikes to take a tour of the local area. Would definitely stay here again.

Abby Hirsch Is a very rude host and has no business running a Bed and Breakfast. We had made plans to stay at her B&B for our 25th Anniversary, we received the coldest reception, in one of the worst storms ever, we were dripping wet and and she was annoyed. She never had roses and champagne waiting in the room as promised, she gave away half the week to someone else and we had to move to another place and she never checked with us once to see if we needed anything. The cracks around the doors were so big that light shined in all night so you could not even sleep, there was no breakfast, she is the worst!!!!!!!!!!!! She lies about what she will give you, then you get there and its a different story.

Room Tip: Stay at the HarborView Inn, it was wonderful, we told them of our experience and they were so unders...

We totally disagree with this clients comments .When she (they) arrived we greeted them with sympathy and a lot of towels to dry off their clothes and suitcases. We did not "give away" her room but told her over a month before her arrival date that we could only accomodate her for 3 nights and offered to either book part of all of here stay elsewhere. She chose to stay here part of the time. We spent hours (this was the time of the President's stay on the island) finding and booking another hotel for the remainder of her stay. Guest (s) stayed in the Lincoln room, one of everyone's favorites. (See reveiews) Noone has ever complained about light shining in, nor did she bring this to our attention. Of couse we serve breakfast. (8:30 to 9:30) See reviews about how ample and excellent it is. Once we checked this guest in we never saw her/them again. They never made any contact with us and left without a goodbye. When she sent an email complaining about her stay we offered a free night..
