When you visit this lighthouse you can no only visit a museum and climb to the top but you can also see pictures showing how it was moved several hundred feet inland away from the cliff. The spiral staircase is narrow and steep so watch your head. A deck was built near the cliff overlooking the ocean next to its original location. You can look down and see how high up you are. There is a boulder with a plaque next to the deck on the actual spot where the light house was originally built. It is surrounded by a golf course. It is a short walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse.

“Love the History”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

Easy to find, right off route 6. Winding staircase to the top of the light. Have to be sure of your steps. Guide explains the history when you get to the top. Every direction you look out, there is a paper telling you exactly what you are seeing. One of them was the light house in Provincetown. Also a short video explaining how the lighthouse was moved in 1996 because of erosion. Path to the original spot of the light house and a viewing area that looks over the ocean.

“A Beacon of Hope”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

This is spectacular! Once the beacon to sailing ships approaching Cape Cod from the East, Highland Light has lost its importance in a world of technology that can pin point the distance from ship to shore. But the powerful beam is still lit at night and during rough weather to signal sailors that land is near. A trip to the top is a must with a full view of the outer Cape including Provincetown on one side and around the bend to Nauset on the other. Walk out to the bluff to discover the erosion that is moving the sand from the ocean side around the tip of the Cape to fill in the beaches on the bay side. Stop in to see the video about how the light was saved by some passionate advocates who convinced the federal government to move it back from the bluff for posterity. This story highlights the creativity and care of engineers charged with moving a massive structure without any damage. As you walk back to your car, turn around to appreciate the importance of light houses to the development of navigation throughout the centuries. They represent a lost but important era in our national history.

“One of my favorite lighthouses”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

Truro Light was one of my favorite lighthouses from the trips. Traveling during May, the off season, allowed us to wander the grounds of the Light by ourselves. The entire time we explored and took pictures, we were the only tourists. The cliff view just past the lighthouse is equally stunning. If you enjoy lighthouses, this is a definite pit stop!
