“Rocks...climbing and walking”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Purgatory Chasm is a fun place to visit for almost all ages. Lots of places to explore, high cliffs and many rocks to climb. Wear good shoes...no flip flops if going through the chasm. There are swings and other play equipment for the kids. Often there is an open hot dog stand. There are picnic tables and grills. Fun. Fun. Fun.

“Quiet woods, not so quiet chasm”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

A nice location for a picnic with plenty of tables and grills. There is also a visitors center and a playground across the street from the chasm. The open woods are great for a quiet hike and the Charley loop is long enough for an easy 1 hour hike. The chasm itself is interesting but very short, we took 1/2 hour while taking a lot of pictures. The only downside was the large number of loud kids. I went for a 40 minute run after the hike and covered the remaining trails in the park.

“Short, nice family hike and byo lunch”
Reviewed June 14, 2013 via mobile

Nice hike through the chasm..fair amount of climbing through the rocks..maybe 30 minutes to the end..then either back the way you came..or a loop around the edge of the chasm..or an extended loop in the forest and then back. Good for kids that like to climb.

Cool place. Great for picnics and just relaxing. Walking through the rocks and small caves provides a cool breeze which is great on a hot summer day. Bring good hiking shoes and some food & drinks and you should have a great time for free!

“A surprise in Massachusetts”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

We were looking for interesting places to visit near home, and read about Purgatory Chasm. It is a short hike, but well worth a trip- but be warned it is a scramble, not a hike. The trail winds over and around big boulders at the bottom of the chasm, while surrounded by high stone cliffs and huge boulders. Make sure you wear sneakers or hiking boots- the rocks are wet and slippery!
