“Good hotel, EXCELLENT location!”
Reviewed May 16, 2009

You can't top the location of this hotel. It sits next to a beautiful lake, hidden away just a hundred yards (or so) off the main road (Rt 20). This was our second wonderful stay at this hotel. Our room (122) was on the first floor looking out at the lake with a small patio and a couple of chairs. After a 90 minute drive, it was great to take our very active 4 yr old out for a walk along the lake. She brought her jump rope and enjoyed jumping in the grassy area between the room and the lake! Check in was a breeze and the desk staff friendly.

The room itself was fine (although we knew from our last stay to bring our own pillows as theirs are not so comfortable). There were a few stray hairs in the bathtub but other than that, the room was very clean. I'm surprised at some of the reviews complaining about "old" looking rooms as ours was clean and up to date. The free wifi was very convenient and fast.

We ate dinner at the Oxhead Tavern across the parking lot from our room. Food was just OK, as was the service. I had the turkey dinner which was plain but fine, husband had the pasta alfredo which was too watery and the kid had the kids cheeseburger which was huge and decent.

The next morning we had the breakfast buffet at the hotel which was fine at $9.95/per person. There is an omlette station which I chose instead of the ready made scrambled eggs which looked a little like they were packaged. They had a good assortment of pastries, breakfast meats, bagels, oatmeal and juices too.

We never used the indoor pool during either stay but it looked clean. The pedal boat rental was closed when we arrived (at 5pm) and when we were leaving the next morning (at 9am) much to my daughter's dissapointment.

Overall, we had a wonderful stay - definitely the best location especially if you want to have a place with something else do do other than sleep.

The Sturbridge Host Hotel, located at the crossroads of the Mass Turnpike and Interstate 84, is easily accesible and in close proximity to shopping and attractions. Our own Cedar Lake is so serene; whether winter, spring, summer or fall, this natural lake offers a peaceful setting for young and old alike. Thank you for allowing us to serve you.

My daughter and I were coming to MA to attend a tour of her new college in Paxton and the college recommended this hotel. We live in VA and I knew that we were not going to get to the hotel until midnight or later, since I had to work and we left late. The front desk staff could not have been more pleasant and accomodating. They said no problem and my room would be reserved for late check-in. Well, we ended up getting there after 1:30am. I called the front desk from the road to be sure we still had our room and they assured me we were fine. The front desk staff was pleasant even at 1:30am in the morning.
Our room was great, very clean and the beds are super comfy. We will be coming back the weekend of May 30th to register my daughter for college classes and we will be staying at the Sturbridge.
It is so nicely decorated and the lake being right outside, it is just a beautiful location. The breakfast and breakfast buffet were delicious.

This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in and I have stayed in quite a few over the years.

We stayed here as part of a convention. The room was very nice and looked new. We asked for help with some things, and the staff was very helpful (and this was at 2am).

Our room was nice and quiet -- both because of the location, and because the other people staying there for the convention were fairly quiet. If I visited again by myself I would definitely make sure to get a room away from the pool atrium area (where noises echo loudly). We had a view of the lake, which was nice.

Room service and the hotel restaurant both have limited hours because of lack of business, so that's something to keep in mind.

We stayed for two nights over April vacation. Our daughters ages 9 and 11 loved every minute of it, and didn't want to leave to hotel. We booked the "Double Beds by the pool" room, we had a sliding glass door that went out right to the pool area. The indoor atrium really made you feel like you were outside, although it was raining and raw out, we had no idea. There was nice comfortable seating around the pool, plenty of towels (I find many hotels skimp on that) We ate almost every meal right in the hotel, the food was great. The Greenhouse breakfast buffet was awesome, better than the average buffet. The VIP lounge had a limited menu, but what they had was fantastic. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. We will absolutely make this a regular trip, we loved it!

My friend and I booked a room for us and our daughters (3 girls ages 9 and 10). The sell for us was the pool because we knew our girls would want to swim as much as possible. We got a room on the ground floor overlooking the pool and it seemed like a nice set up. Sure the hallways are a bit run down and dingy but the room itself was in pretty decent shape. The bed linens were new and the beds themselves were very cushy and comfy.

When we booked the room we saw on the booking website that the pool was opened from 9 to 10. That was perfect. Each room came with a couple of chairs and a table overlooking the pool so my friend and I were looking forward to hanging out at the pool while our girls swam.

Then the problems started. First a huge party of people booked rooms near us and stole our chairs and table so we had no where to sit. We were told by the very nice pool guy to borrow pool chairs. Those were also stolen by that group.

Second, that very same huge party completely took over the hot tub area. We couldn't get anywhere near it. Kind of a bummer that they were allowed to have a party at the actual hot tub so no one could use it. After they stole our chairs (twice) I thought sitting in the hot tub would be a nice way to watch the kids. But no.

Third, the pool closes at 9 p.m. and opens at 10 a.m. HORRIBLE hours. It closes too early to enjoy and opens to late to use. We were kicked out of the pool at 9:00 p.m. by the nice pool guy (he was nice but insistent we get our kids out ASAP!). He also warned us that if we tried to use the pool before 10:00 a.m., an alarm would go off when we opened the gate. HORRIFYING! We expressed our dissapointment but he said "that's just how it is."

Fourth, the very large party was allowed to continue partying out at the pool area until WAY PAST MIDNIGHT! And in the hallways... everywhere! Screaming baby and all. I'm not kidding, it was a huge crowd of people that just refused to disburse. When the baby kept screaming in the pool area past midnight, I knew we had checked into the wrong place. No one seemed to care.

FIFTH, the hotel very quietly opened the pool at 9:30 a.m. for THAT VERY SAME LOUD GROUP! We were told NO WAY... we couldn't swim before 10:00 a.m. but then, suddenly, they are allowed to not only swim but MAKE HUGE amounts of noise FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. WHAT??!!

We went to the front desk to not only inquire but express our disappointment at the special treatment this group seemed to get and he was not apologetic at all. He said the pool was "very quietly" opened up just for them.

The only way I would recommend this hotel to anyone is if you are part of a huge group looking for special treatment. If you want to be disruptive and rude to everyone around you, by all means, stay here. If you are looking for a relaxing weekend with your kids and hope to enjoy the amenities and get a good night's sleep, by all means bypass this place.

The poolside rooms, just one of several view types, are very papular with the youths and families that stay with us. The atrium-style courtyard with it's lush greenery, really gives you a feeling of being outside. In an effort to minimize noise from the courtyard area we close the pool at 9:00pm. We appreciate your feedback as we continuously strive to improve ourselves.

Not being used to staying in US motels I found this hotel a bit of an oddity. Our room had a balcony which overlooked the restaraunt/pool area, the rooms on the "outside" were apparently had a much better outlook. I'm glad I only stayed one night as there's absolutely nothing to recommend this hotel or it's location, good only as a stopover after a long drive, you wouldn't choose to stay here.

Our unique hotel boasts several different "view" rooms; pool/courtyard, or mini golf course or lake view. As the premiere full service property in Sturbridge we offer many amenities, from complimentary coffee to same day dry cleaning service. Located off of I84 and I90, the ease of access makes this hotel a great stop-over. It's historic attractions, serene setting and specialty shopping, also makes this hotel a great destination. Thank you.

Stayed at the "Host" recently for business. Room was clean, shower hot with good pressure, business conference rooms and set up were good, however.......dont bother with the Greenhouse's breakfast buffet. Mealy cold scrambled eggs, home fries that had to be previously frozen and cooked up with tons of salt, the oatmeal was thin, cold, watery and I would argue whether or not that was a big nasty bowl of poorly prepared instant, bacon and sausages were "eh", oh and the toasters did not work properly if at all some of them. The waitress couldnt have cared less whether we had all our food left on the plates or not she still brought over the bill without questioning. We shouldve said something but figured it wouldnt have mattered.
