“Really nice state park campground”
Review of Wells State Park

Wells State Park

Most of the spots here are pretty private. Spots 24 and 25 looked big and level - right on the water. Some spots up on a hill in the trees. Bathrooms were clean and water pressure good but nothing spectacular. The lake here has no lifeguard but the roped off area for swimming is shallow and clean. We also saw a cute fishing class being led by park ranger. Reasonably close to the highway - and full grocery, walmart, etc. just a few miles from the entrance. We happened to get the last spot (#23) and while it was wide and pretty level, it was close to a super loud family next door - and no trees between. We are thinking that's why it was the last one. Overall, a nice place to stop. Good bike riding and easy launch for kayaks.

Several different trails to match your mood and keep it interseting. Also, great pavillions for picnics.

A friend and I took the 1 mile loop walk which was marked Heart Healthy. The walk is partly on paved surface and then enters the forest with a well maintained trail amid old stone walls, ferns, some and boggy areas on left and right. Easy walk.

I am a Sturbridge resident and have hiked Wells State Park in every season. The park is ideal for families looking to spend some times in a rural environment and for walks in the woods. I agree with the other post-not a lot of activities in Wells outside of the small beach and the hiking trails.

For hiking trails, they are very well marked and well maintained. For those looking for a longer hike, I recommend combining North and South Trails. The view from Carpenter's Rocks is superb and relatively easy to get to. Mill Pond Trail is also neat as it visits as old mill site. During one of my winter (snowshoe) hikes, I even saw two beaver on top of the ice at Mill Pond!

Great place for moderate length family hikes.

We booked a two night stay at this park with the hopes of spending the day at the lake. We pulled into the park and it seemed abandoned. It was dark and gloomy and there was not a soul around. We went down to the lake to find a small sandy, grassy area with no real beach to sit and relax on. The water was murky with some type of algae in it. Needless to say, we packed the kids back into the car and left. We found another campground in the area and stayed there for the evening.

We were very disappointed as we have visited other state parks and loved them.
