Description: The Lion's Den pub, located downstairs at The Red Lion Inn, offers entertainment seven nights a week, and never a cover charge. There's different entertainment each night, with regular appearances by local performers including David Grover, the Sun Mountain Fiddler, and the Housatonic Philharmonic, offering everything from acoustic folk to R&B, and reggae to the blues. Some nationally recognized performers have been known to grace our humble pub stage from time to time - James Taylor, Lauren Ambrose and Roger Salloom among them.On chilly nights ask for a table by the fireplace and enjoy a genuine pint of ale or stout, a glass of your favorite wine, or a mug of hot mulled cider - all accompanied by our classic pub fare. The Lion's Den is open (until 1 a.m. on weekends), with entertainment from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday and entertainment from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. House guests can access the Lion's Den through the Tavern, or by entering beneath the red awning on Main Street.

“A nice late night stop before retiring...”
Reviewed November 7, 2011

Just walk downstairs through the stairway in the main bar and enjoy a late night drink with local music and entertainment. You don't even have to go outside during ski season! This pub caps off the whole New England experience - very friendly and relaxing for the end of the day.

“A pleasant experience but don't go for the food”
Reviewed October 18, 2011

We decided upon the Lion's Den without taking the time to refer to TripAdvisor and that was a mistake as I've now found out that it rates poorly. We agree with the poor overall rating, but for some different reasons. In any case, in retrospect we definitely would have chosen another restaurant.

Our meal at 4pm on an October Sunday started with an appealing menu posted outside. We were seated promptly even though the restaurant was almost full (we get quite frustrated when we see a couple of open tables and a restaurant takes its time, presumably hoping that it will induce the purchase of an extra round of drinks).

We decided to order soup and then split a sandwich, as we were planning to have another meal later in the evening. This request was greeted very pleasantly by our server who was prompt and efficient throughout the meal aside from a failure to refill our water glasses.

I had the clam chowder while my partner chose the French onion soup. Neither of the soups was as flavorful as we hoped. It was as if they had been watered down, perhaps to stretch the supplies because the restaurant was so busy. There were a couple of clam bits in the chowder, but it was mostly potatoes and celery in a milky, not creamy, chowder. There wasn't as much cheese on the onion soup as my partner expected, and the rye bread selected for the crouton-like top of the onion soup overwhelmed the very light broth.

The grilled egglplant and avocado sandwich was presented very well and our server remembered to bring an extra plate. It included a nice leafy salad, some marinated/pickled onion slivers, and home-made potato chips. The generous pieces of avocado were delicious, perfectly ripe and so flavorful. But the grilled eggplant was a mere sliver. It was shaved very thin and added no flavor at all to the sandwich. Even the potato chips seemed to lack flavor.

All told, the food was so bland that it almost seemed like this New England tavern was trying to emulate the worst in British pub food. Just like you need to be a bit judicious in selecting a restaurant in England, we should have been more careful this time.

As an alternative, for less than the cost of our soups and sandwich, we could each have had the Sunday turkey dinner special. Perhaps that would have been a better choice (though looking at the meals served to other tables, it appeared that the broccoli was overcooked).
