Wonderful first visit to Naumkeag and we will be back. This is a wonderful property and the Trustees are doing a great job of preservation and restoration. We had a great guide for the house tour and a real pro for the garden tour. The views are superb and the renovated Blue Steps are a real hit.

9 times out of 10, I go to a house tour to see the grounds. Usually the house is interesting for a couple of minutes and that's it. This tour was a nice departure from the norm. The house tour, lasting about 1 hour, was very well executed. The guide was very knowledgeable and kept the group moving while answering all questions.

The grounds were beautiful. My only complaint was the self paced audio tour. I felt the descriptions were a little long winded and didn't provide the information that I was looking for. But, no big deal, we just walked the yard on our own.

Construction on the grounds is still underway but it was still worth the stop. Beautiful home and grounds, and the real treat are the tour guides. Great personalities, lots of interesting information. May not want to go if it's very hot, but otherwise - just lovely! And, hopefully, the Trustees of the Reservation will decide to refit the house to as it was when Choate lived there, not his furniture-cluttered wife. Don't not go because of this; go if only for the view. If you can take a picnic and eat looking out to that view, do. Maybe need to call ahead.

Many years ago, I had visited this beautiful place. Today i went to see the beautiful fountain staircase again and -aaaack- it was all surrounded by a mud puddle. I should have scrutinized the website. I guess the birches were old and all of them have been torn out. The sweeping hills on both sides are bare when they used to be a shady enchanted forest. If you are looking to see these gardens in all their splendor, be prepared to be disappointed. I don't know what's wrong with them as they are, but over the next three years they will all be torn out and replaced. Some of your views will be of heavy machinery.Interesting grand home and beautiful distant views, but the gardens you'll need to have some patience with.

For anyone with an interest in garden design, a visit to Naumkeag is essential.
The gardens, developed over many decades, are currently being restored to pristine
condition, and a stroll through the grounds reveals the designer Fletcher Steele's
restless and wonderful intelligence. Whether you're admiring a long view, or closely inspecting
a hidden corner, there's nothing but delight and beauty before you.
