We had the good fortune of finding the Route 28 Diner on a very trying weekend on the Cape. After leaving the Cape Cod Hospital after my father's passing the nurses had directed us to another establishment for breakfast. The establishment we left for was full and didn't smell worth a wait, so we headed down the road and passed the Route 28 Diner. It looked like the diners we remembered as kids and more importantly it looked clean.
It was and we spent the next three mornings having breakfast here. If an establishment can make you feel comforted at the worst possible time, if it can make you feel welcome, and look forward to eating something when you are at the bottom that says a great deal about the product, the people and the place that is the Route 28 Diner.
We quietly ate our first breakfast and were so impressed with the cleanliness of the diner and the freshness of the food. Let me start out by saying I am very, very, very, picky when I eat out. Everything we ate for the next 3 mornings was fresh, homemade and delicious. No greasy spoon diner here. It was like being at a really good grandma's house. We had the Belgian waffles everyday and they were light, fluffy, flavorful and crispy. Real maple syrup accompanied them. Fantastic eggs benedict, blew my homemade ones away, best I ever had. Super omelet with fresh spinach. A very large small orange juice, and super coffee. Eggs were fresh and cooked perfect every morning.
And as far as service each morning it was great, on our second morning we felt like regulars. These are really good people running a really nice establishment and we can't thank them enough for providing us a safe harbor on an awful weekend.
On our second morning the owner ended up talking with us and sharing stories of his mom's passing. His kindness was so unexpected and so greatly appreciated not to mention that the conversation offered us solace and a chance to exhale.
All that and a great cup of coffee.
If you drive by this place you are truly missing out on the way life used to be, still should be, and thank goodness once in awhile still is.
My husband and I would like to thank the owners and staff for the great breakfasts and the warm atmosphere.
