“Wonderful Smoke Way Away From the BBQ Belt”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

When our friends, who recently moved to Boston, decided to meet at a BBQ restaurant, we were a little bit tentative. What we found was truly smoked brisket and ribs with the perfect texture. When people rave about meat falling off the bone it usually means it was boiled first. This meat was tender and all of the tenderness came from the smoking process.

Cost: $15-20. Our party was 8, we got 3/4 apps, avg 1.5 drinks pp, 7 entrees and the bill was $254- incl tip.

The restaurant has a door to the left and a door to the right. To the left is the bar. Not being from Boston, the bar amused me in that it looked like every Boston bar I've seen on t.v.: a little weathered and utilitarian. There is casual seating upstairs and a full bar and seating in the basement, which has a dark almost cave-like feel - but not in a bad way. The bathrooms are a couple closets and up 3 or 4 stairs which was quirky.

They have several BBQ sauces and the group rating on the sauces ranged from good to excellent. Entrees come with slaw and beans, both of which were tastefully prepared. Pot lickers is really just some greens and broth- which was a surprise, but it was a satisfying and tasty dish that would be perfect on a cold day. The greens themselves were very, very good. Drinks were solid.

Stay away: from the hush puppies, average corn bread, and fried okra (okra was better with the lemon but we would never order it again).

We would not hesitate to visit again.

“Best BBQ in the area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

If you are looking for good BBQ, you need to go to Redbones. They have a great beer list, always changing!

My only warning is that going on the weekend night will be very difficult. The place is always backed on Friday and Saturday nights. I would say the best time to go is lunch-time.

“Bury this bone!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

Crowded as ever but the food was lackluster at best. The chili was a bowl of green liquid with a few pieces of meet and beans. The ribs were fatty and tasteless. 5 people sharing 3 meals and still $92! Time to step it up or people will realize how bad this old staple has truly gotten.

“Very Good Barbecue, dated appearance but worth the visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013

Luckily we arrive.a little early and before the rush of dinnertime. We were promptly seated and our waiter appeared very quickly to great us and take our drink orders.

They offer a wide selection of beers, probably the best bourbon selection I have seen in ages, as well as soft drinks and iced tea served in mason jars.

We started with the hush puppies which were only okay. The cornbread served with the meal was better.

The baby back ribs were well cooked with a nice smoke ring and came off the bone quite easily. The brisket was moist and tender, a very good dish. The sides of coleslaw had a tangy vinegary taste that was enjoyable, as was the potato salad. The baked beans were not a hit, we would have preferred Boston style as opposed to the southern style black-eyed beans.

The prices are quite reasonable and the service was very good. Overall I still think this is one of the better places for barbecue in the greater Boston area.

“Awesome staff, bad expensive bbq.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2013 via mobile

This place is always in demand, which is surprising considering that the food is nothing to be proud of, especially for the prices. Pains me to say it because the staff is great, from the greeters to the guy who home delivers food on his bike... The folks are soulful but the vittles ain't. Seems like instead of yet another froyo place, Davis Square could use a real BBQ.
