A small restaurant and bar in a basement on the main street of Shelburne Falls

We ate here two out of the three nights we spent in the area. Really good food, friendly and helpful waiting staff and a great atmosphere. On the second night there was a jazz trio playing easy listening music which we enjoyed.

First time in we both had the soft-shelled, blue clawed crab. It is breadcrumbed and deep fried and you eat the lot. We’d never eaten a soft-shelled crab before and it was delicious. It came with a pile of pistachio rice and three greens - asparagus, kale and fiddlehead ferns (another first). The fiddlehead ferns look like little rolled up green caterpillars, but taste great. A glass of Pinot Grigio to go with it.

Second time around we ordered a starter of blue clawed crab cakes with sweetcorn salsa to share and then each had scallops. All wonderful. Great scallops, perfectly cooked, served with fiddlehead fern, kale and asparagus and saffron rice.

It's really best to make a reservation as this place is not huge and it's always busy.

My husband and I have been on holiday in the U.S., visiting friends and family for the past two and a half weeks. We've been in Los Angeles, Boston and western Massachusetts and have to admit this was one of the two best meals we had on our entire trip.

Not only was the food excellent but the atmosphere was warm and inviting -- not in the least bit stuffy or pretentious -- and our entire experience was immensely positive. The chef knows a thing or two about food (and about hospitality), and my scallops were fantastic, as was the deliciously decadent pot of chocolate mousse to follow the meal.

I also loved the bread which was an optional extra at a minimal price and worth every penny. Deliciously salted and presented, it was one of the highlights of the meal for me.

The waitstaff at Blue Rock is knowledgeable, friendly and warm and we'll certainly make a point of returning here when we're back in this part of the world.

We ate at the Blue Rock to celebrate our 40th anniversary last night. The meal was superb from start to finish. Everything about our experience was celebratory because of great service and excellent food. Both the food and the drinks were the best we've had in some time. We shared the crabcake appetizer. It's clear that the chef seeks unique and delicate seasoning to bring out the best in whatever he creates. We loved the flavor. One of us had the short ribs and the other had the scallops, sharing and savoring every taste. We were satisfied and full at the end of the meal, but decided to order the fried ice cream just for fun. I can't imagine a better place to celebrate any happy occasion, or just to dine out for wonderful food. The menu has quite a range of choices, from informal to formal, and the prices are right. We toasted with some fine champagne, and decided to come back with friends next time. What an amazing find in lovely Shelburne Falls.

We have dined here twice and both times the food was outstanding. Be prepared for it to be a bit slow, but that's a positive because they take the time to prepare everything properly. The cocktails are well-made, the entrees are interesting and unique, and the portions are enough to fill you up but still human-sized. They prepared the scallops without bacon on request and with no problem. The softshell crab was excellent and the rice superb. Basement location. Definitely worth a visit.
