“Nice inexpensive campground”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

I've stayed at Shawme-Crowell many times, most recently on June 1, 2014. It's a nice, quiet campground with good bathroom facilities. A little far from typical Cape Cod destinations, but very close to the Cape Cod Canal for fishing/biking/walking and nearby Sandwich has nice restaurants. The campground store is well stocked if you forgot something at home and Stop & Shop is just a few minutes down the road if you need to resupply.

“Fresh air, clean camping spaces, beautiful place to visit.”
Reviewed May 22, 2014

We no longer camp, but visit friends at Shawme-Crowell, each year while we visit on the Cape.
The sites are roomy, the toilets always clean, and it is so restful. It is nice to sit back, close your eyes and let your mind wander, picturing how it must have been years ago when the settlers and Indians roamed through the trees, and live in that area. Definitely a place to visit whether you are camping or just spending the day. I love it in the fall, when the colors run rampant, and the cool breezes rustle through the trees.

“Camp or Walk or just drive through the Beautiful Shawme-Crowell State Forest”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

Hundreds of acres have been set aside with this State Forest that allows visitors to walk through the pristine woods or better yet camp for a few days and enjoy all that the first settlers would have also experienced (well, they didn't have the running water like you will have !). The rolling hills and rambling woods are filled with Pine, Oak, Maple and Rhododendrons and many many more flora and fauna of New England. Your sense of smell and vision will delight with every step you take. You may very well see deer, fox, coyote and lots and lots of birds. Enjoy !

“Off Season Camping in New England - November!”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

November and off season camping was available! - we called from 40 mins away, already on the road, and they said if we could be there shortly, it was no problem. I understand they have sites available Thursday, Friday & Saturday only, must leave Sunday by 11am. No hookups, but the restrooms were open (clean) with toilets, showers, hand dryer & there was a faucet on just outside the restrooms. Picnic tables were placed upside down on the fire pits, but our neighbors, who were tent camping, had fire going most of the night without any problem. (it got down to 39 degrees this night).

We showed up with a 31 ft, and a site was found that could accommodate our RV. Looking around, we saw that most of the sites would be tricky for a 31ft, however, a 40 foot diesel pusher with toad, was seen leaving the next morning.

Site was really clean, level, and was a hard packed sand base, littered with soft fall pine needles. The only remains were from Halloween; 3 small hand carved pumpkins on a rock. I am so glad they were not removed - wicked cute! Our site #28, and others we drove by, were semi-private, and were separated by trees, rocks, bushes, etc.

Faint noise from the highway was only slightly noticeable. Due to the fact the campground had only a total of 30 people, including 2 boy scout troops, we only had one neighbor. Maybe if the camp was full, we wouldnt have noticed the highway at all. It was really a very peaceful stay.

More campgrounds should be open during late fall and early spring. Like if you want more local out of season camping in Massachusetts! (see my post on Scusset, similar fall camping just before the canal)
