I am 50 years old, and I dine out two or three times a week in every sort of restaurant. Without parallel, this evening's experience -- the service and the food itself -- was the most disappointing of my life. Our party of eight was seated at 6:30 p.m., and our drinks did not arrive until 7:15. The appetizers? 8. Dinner itself? 8:30. And the server did not explain nor offer an apology of any sort. Two of the entrees were hot, six were cold or undercooked. We've eaten at Tomatoes a dozen times over the past year, and have had some terrific experiences, and some mediocre. But tonight's experience takes the cake for an absolute display of contempt and callousness towards guests. Upon leaving, I told the hostess of our dissatisfaction. "Without apology, she said, "it was unusually busy for a Sunday night." Interesting, since half the tables were empty. Maybe that's because so many other people have had the same experience recently.
