Owner description: This monument commemorates the Pilgrim's first landing in Provincetown (not Plymouth), where they conceived, wrote and committed to the Mayflower Compact - the foundational document for the democracy America enjoys today. The Monument is the tallest all-granite structure in the U.S. rising 353 feet above sea level, and at the top, visitors are provided the most spectacular view of Cape Cod.In addition to the MOnument, the Provincetown Museum presents the unique cultural heritage of this historic town with special exhibitions and permanent displays. The Monument and Museum has ample parking, is open daily from APril 1st through November 30, and NEW this year - a food concession call the "Shallop Cafe" where visitors can enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking Provincetown and the Bay.

The monument itself is pretty impressive looking. We wandered around the Provincetown Museum and then did the big climb. It's a combination of steps and ramps up to the top, with no elevator in the place. It seems SO far up while you're going up (and even down), but you feel somewhat cool when you make it to the top. The view from above is stunning. It's so wonderful to take in the sight of all of the gorgeous water and to see all of the buildings from so high above. The gift shop sells t-shirts that say, "I made it to the top!" They only had a standard men's cute white t-shirt with bright blue print. I wish they'd had women's version, too (softer fabric, more feminine cut), but that's just a tiny wish. Anyway, it was fun and we would recommend it to anyone visiting Provincetown. I would warn anyone with any kind of respiratory/heart condition to use caution because if you were to have a problem while halfway up, it might take some time for help to arrive!

We climbed the monument ramps/stairs just after they opened on a Saturday morning in September. There were just a few other people around at that time. The views were amazing and it was a lot of fun to climb such a tall structure. You can see the geological curve of the landscape of the cape, you can see Boston's buildings/skyline, and you can see the pier and all of Provincetown from this vantage point.

Neither my husband nor I had climbed the monument since we were kids. So, we were in for a wonderful surprise as we surveyed the entire town. It was peaceful and inspiring.

The museum attached to the monument is full of information, as well. Don't skip it thinking the monument is the main attraction. The grounds are also high enough to offer their own view.

The hike up to the top of the monument will take you anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes but its worth it when you see the view. Be sure to put this on your list when visiting Provincetown. In addition to the monument, the museum and gift shop are wonderful too.

One of the best times to see this lovely small yet marvellous museum at the base of the Pilgrim Monument is on Thanksgiving eve, when the "Lighting of the Monument" occurs. The lighting is an annual well attended event when everyone meets for the countdown to switching on the lights that have been hung from the very tall Monument (252 feet) which marks the landing of the Pilgrims in Provincetown. The museum is free that evening but whatever the cost of admission, this is a great find for it tells you of the true story of the Pilgrims and also has some wonderful exhibits - including rooms aboard the ship, the Mayflower, and others which show the local fishing and whaling industries many years ago.

It is also worth climbing to the top of the Monument for a view of Provincetown AND the whole of Cape Cod.
