Owner description: Now surrounded by protective pillars, this unimposing rock was allegedly the first piece of land touched by the Pilgrims in the New World.

I am not sure what I expected here - maybe more than what is on display. Plenty of parking in the surrounding Pilgrim Memorial Park area - we walked over to the rather Greco/Roman structure that houses 'The Rock'. An interesting building that gives you the opportunity to look down and see - a rock on the sand below. Even though the rock is engraved 1620 - it could be any rock - who's to know? You will have to use your imagination a lot to envisage William Bradford and the Pilgrims hot footing it off the Mayflower. Speaking of which there is a replica of said ship close by which you can visit. Don't make the visit just for The Rock - you could be disappointed.

We were drawn to the Roman like pillars on the waterfront - only then did we discover The Rock dated 1630 sitting in a bed of sand; nothing spectacular but worth a look since it is on the waterfront and most people would tend to pass it anyway if you're in that area. Don't make a special trip though.

If you are looking for something dramatic, this is not for you. Its just a big rock with a date chiseled into it. Even if this is the rock that the Pilgrims first set foot on in the New World, there is no visible evidence that this was the case.

If you're touring the area, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a look at the rock. I can't understand why I would have expected more, but there is just not a lot to it. Perhaps more informational signs would serve it better. It's quick to look at, but certainly don't make the trip just to see it, or you may be a little disappointed.

While visiting Boston, we decided to take the short trip to one of the nations most historic landmarks. Yes it's just a rock and was probably not even given a second look by a pilgrim but the history and feel of the whole town is unforgettable. The seashore is filled with little shops and places to eat (mostly fresh seafood.) Visiting Plymouth has definitely made me want to return to Mass & explore The Cape. Loved it!!
