Owner description: Hancock Shaker Village is a living history museum whose mission is to bring the Shaker story to life and preserve it for future generations. Called the "City of Peace" by the Shakers who lived here for 179 years until 1960, this community was the third of 19 major Shaker Villages located in New York, New England, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. There are 18 original historic buildings on this site. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to making the Village a center for reflection on living the principled life. The values that the Shakers embraced -- equality, pacifism, community, sustainability, responsible land stewardship, innovation, simplicity and quality in work -- resonate with us today. In addition to viewing the architecture, we have so many things to see including the farm and gardens, the animals, costumed interpreters, demonstrations of handicrafts like weaving, spinning, and blacksmithing, hiking and walking trails, the Discovery Room where kids can do hands-on activities, photo and art exhibitions, a cafe and picnic area. We have modern amenities and the village is handicapped accessible.

While it is interesting to see how the Shakers lived, I found this "musuem" lacking in many ways. There is very little information provided to enhance the experience. The booklet you get when you buy your tickets is all you can expect if you don't take one of the guided tours. The staff in the various buildings were mostly disinterested teenagers busy having conversations amongst themselves. Those that we were able to engage in conversation knew very little about the Shakers or this village and seemed to be there just to make sure things weren't stolen or damaged. We ran into one very informative guide in the wood shop but that was it.

An excellent indoor/outdoor museum. Great interpretation, lovely exhibits, well laid out and just a beautiful place to visit. I would say pretty handicapped accessible, and easy enough to bring a stroller. Give yourself a day here - there is lots to see. They have a schedule for the day, and you can direct your own tour as you'd like. Great exhibits for children too. If you like learning about other people and cultures, this is the place for you.

Surrounded by the picturesque Berkshire Hills, Hancock Shaker Village holds a wide range of demonstrations and exhibits showing the Shaker lifestyle and beliefs. The round barn and the water turbine engine in the laundry house attest to the ingenuity and efficiency which underlined Shaker living. Knowledgeable interpretters give a glimpse into the culture of both the Shakers and their neighbors. The village gift shop contains many Shaker items and information. A visit to Hancock Shaker Village is well worth planning.
