After a wait of over an hour for our reservation and with profuse apologies from the hostess and owner, we were finally seated on the patio for dinner. In retrospect, I am not sure why they couldn't have seated us at one of the empty marble-topped tables out there if diners hadn't vacated the tables being used. Anyway, we thought were ok with the delay, but it tainted our experience. The sun had set and it got quite chilly, it was late to dine, and we were overly hungry. I think it would have been nice to have been offered an app while we were waiting. In fact, after an hour the hostess took the app order, but then a table became open, and she cancelled the order, so we had to wait another 15 minutes for the server to take and put the order in again. The waitress was minimally attentive and courteous and somewhat abrupt. For example, when she brought the entrees, one plate had no vegetables, so I asked about them. She replied, "I'm bringing them. I only have two hands." (The veggies for one meal were on a separate plate.) The food: delicious...both fish dishes were tasty and well-cooked, vegetables a bit crunchy. IMO the cod could've used more sauce, though. We were comped dessert by the owner. But I don't eat dessert and we weren't too eager to stay longer (so could the app have been comped instead?) but we opted for one - the chocolate mousse - which was delicious. Arrival time: 7:20; finished with dinner: approx 9:30. We've eaten there many times over the years, and will return, though it might be a while. The owner and hostess were both attentive and assured us the long wait was unique. In hindsight, it could have been handled better. And, next time, if there's a wait, we'll be much more proactive!

“Inconsistant”

Went there for the Lobster Roll. It did not taste fresh. Chips were stale. Home made pickles did not taste that great. We've had this same lunch here several times and it was much better. We will not go back again.

“Great food and service!”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

We returned to The Academy Ocean Grille after a 9 year hiatus. At that time, there was a different owner and the reputation was very good. We were very pleased that this is still a very good find in Orleans for a well prepared dinner. My nut encrusted halibut was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside; Perfect! The ambiance is very pleasant as was the quality of the service. Still good after all these years!

“Fine, upscale, quiet, pleasant restaurant with good food.”
Reviewed May 19, 2014

We visited the Academy Ocean Grille with friends. Four people. It was a Sunday night, mid-spring and so still off-season on Cape Cod. Clearly there were some locals. The place was not filled. We had a reservation and were greeted cordially and were promptly offered a nice round table in a corner. I started with a house salad - greens for the most part, with a nice gentle dressing, fresh and tasty. I ordered veal saltimbocca, which was clearly pounded flat and quite thin, with prosciiutto and cheese and a sauce that was not overpowering. This was quite good, but another who tried it found it to be tougher than might be expected. The flavor was very good. It came with a side of a few sauteed vegetables and scalloped potatoes. For desert (which I usually skip) we tried the chocolate pudding. This was absolutely superb - clearly the best chocolate pudding in our experience and the high point of the dinner. Another tried the swordfish and found it a bit less tender than expected, but with good flavor. We happened to hit it on a special night when salad, main course and desert could be had for $25, which given the relatively high quality of the food, was quite a bargain. The $25 menu was more limited than the main fill menu and we plan to visti again to try other of the offerings. All in all a pleasant experience. And, the staff is friendly, responsive and helpful.

“Nice relaxed atmosphere”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

We felt welcome here from the moment we stepped in. The woman who greeted us made us feel instantly relaxed, and we were lucky enough to also have her as our server. Food was yummy, the mixed drink I ordered was surprisingly strong (woohoo!) but also good. Service was attentive and well timed. We were able to enjoy our meal and have some nice conversation without being interrupted, but when we were ready to leave, our bill came quickly. I would say that the food was a little pricier than we're used to, but then again it's the Cape. Can definitely see us coming back here.
