We swam here for a few hours and it is wonderful, but average for the island. Go to Katama and eat at the Right Fork Diner on the airfield. The South beach is right there and the food is tremendous. South Beach is sandy and super clear and the surf is far more substantial (family would do better at the Oak Bluffs area).

Water was very clean when we visited this August, however, the beach itself was quite littered with trash - beer cans, tin foil, and just about anything else that washed ashore or was left over from patrons.

Each morning, we'd take a stroll out to the Oak Bluffs beach at dawn with our pups before the crowds started appearing. Since we stayed at the Surfside Motel, the beach was just across the street. Very peaceful and lovely view of the ocean, and soft sand on the southern area of the beach. Admittedly, by late morning, the ferries were disgorging their passengers and the area got very busy. Nevertheless, during the three days we were on MV this July, the beach was never crowded or dirty. The best place to find nice shells, for those interested, is on the rocky beach area north of the ferry docks.

The beach is small but convienent to the town area. There is parking along the road. there is a sand bar and most days you can swim out to it. The beach does not have rough water.

Full disclosure, I live in this town. I do agree that the beginning of Circuit can be quite busy. I walked through yesterday evening and saw some litter but It was not strewn with trash. Especially considering the amount of people who were there. I wouldn't recommend that small part of town unless you wanted to frequent the many bars there. The other end of the street has lots of shops and a few restaurants and is much mellower.

The main ferry terminal where the over whelming majority of tourist, arrive has shaded benches to sit on and a two year old air conditioned ticket lobby and is located next to the town beach. There are also newly renovated public bathrooms in an adjacent building. Also right there is Ocean Park, a huge green lawn with a beautiful band stand where the August fireworks are held. A great place to fly a kite or throw a frisbee after the beach. A five minute walk from there are the ginger bread houses. Three hundred little ginger bread style houses set up around a large out door church, the tabernacle. It is rightfully in The National Register of Historic Places. The area from Circuit Ave, the main street east toward the beach is the first planned development in the country and has many green parks that promenade towards the water and have lots of cute houses along the way.
