What a unique charming little village! The Victorian cottages were just adorable - some were really fun with their unique uses of color and decorations - even down to the type of railing used around those inviting front porches. One of them had a Wizard of Oz theme complete with little figurines hidden in the shrubs. The flower beds were spectacular- it was so peaceful and relaxing meandering through the area with one street leading to the next and no two cottages were alike. Don't miss this!

Peaceful walk through this little village within a resort town. It's as though you have stepped back in to time, with only the occasional passing car on a distant road to remind you these cottages have been loved and cared for over 125 years. Start with the hushed reverence of the tabernacle once you enter the grounds, then spread out exploring the streets one by one. The brightly colored houses just inspire you with the delicate, yet lasting, craftsmanship!

This site (MVCMA) is listed in the National register of historic places... It is an entirely unique village of over 300 little, colorful wooden Victorian gingerbread cottages surrounding an iron tabernacle (originally wooden) and is a huge tourist draw, it originally started as a tent area (hence "campground") for Methodist summer meetings dating back to the late 1800's.

The cottages themselves are reason enough to visit, but on only one night a year in mid-August the owners place thousands of lit Chinese lanterns on all the cottages and have been doing this for over 100 years. The "Campgound" hosts a "Grand Illumination", starting with a band concert and community sing, which is a wonderfully old-fashioned family event, and the lighting of the Chinese lanterns starts at the end of the concert after dark. Brillinlat!

There were about 12,000 people there this year to see this lovely attraction. If you come early enough in the day, you can visit one of the cottages which is now the museum for a nominal amount. There are also all sorts of special events in the campground all summer, many of which are free-will donations.

Some of the cottages are rented out during the summer, that will be my next adventure!

It's hard to describe how enchanting these homes are. It's like walking through a fairy tale. Pay the $2 and go to the museum to hear about the history and establishment of this neighborhood that was once a campground. If you are lucky and see a resident sitting on a porch (as we were) stop and talk. They will likely love to tell you about the homes. This was the highlight of the day!
