Owner description: Try your luck at catching the brass ring and winning a free ride on the oldest working carousel in the U.S., which has been enchanting children and adults for over a hundred years. The 20 hand-carved horses on this official historic landmark have real horsehair manes and tails.

This is not a ride for thrills and excitement. It is a step back in history. The horses have real horsehair and real stirrups, not the plastic stuff of today. There is a lot of history regarding the Carousel. When the summer residents of Martha's vineyard would return after the winter, it would open on Easter Sunday just so they could all come down in their finery and take a ride. It was a major social event as everyone could see who had survived the winter and returned to Martha's Vineyard. Since there were many different religions they would not all see each other in church. I am in my 60's, and I loved taking a ride back into history. I just wished I could have ridden it in my Easter finery!

A simple and lovely attraction to start or end a day in Oak Bluffs with and treat the kids.

Our youngest boy loved it when he was 5. Our oldest enjoyed the game room, as did we.

Well visiting Marthas Vineyard, you must make it a point to stop in on this attraction for kids and adults alike. This is the oldest carousel in America and is a true antique that needs to be ridden. It is old but well maintained including the brass ring game. It is only a dollar fifty a ride and truly remarkable with the old music box playing and authentic horses. Include this on your stops around the island and be sure to take a ride!!

I think this is a must-see for anyone interested in the history OR in a quaint ride on a really "old-school" carousel.

I know parents and grandparents still coming to MV that enjoy taking their kids (and grandkids) to go. It may be the highlight of your child's trip for only a year or two but it will always be a "must see" each year and a treasured memory. I took my toddler their for the first time this summer and she was awestruck!

Not sure what some other reviewers were expecting. This is not a Disney ride. It's best for young children or history buffs. The ride itself, frankly, is not that impressive for teens or adults. It's a small, cramped, but authentic treasure.

Other than pretty pics you probably have seen, the carousel is not really impressive at all when you see it real other than the fact that it is real old Vic antique. Well, it is only run for summer visitors, not for the year rounders, so, a shallow deal.

In the shabby honky tonk town (Oak Bluffs) during summer nights, when the minors get drunk and loud in the street, the waspy parents take their toddlers to this place to have lame fun.

Indeed, there is nothing you can do if you don't like the beaches and the woods, cycling on MV. Movie theaters are small and full of summer kids watching x-rated movies without their parents and hook up with others for the night and smoke stuff in the sands near the parking lot and the common.

You never want to show this to your kids, do you? I would go to this carousel during the day and take a quick ride and get over it. There is not even one good restaurant on this island.
