If you have memories of childhood that and longings for flavors that no longer exist in this mass marketed artificial world, get ready for a magical experience. Northfield Creamie transports you back to those halcyon days of yum yummy yummier and yummiest! You can't find better ice-cream in a store (no not even the organic whole shebang stores). This place is like heaven on earth. Cycle down to Northfield Creamie and bring your banjo (or guitar or saxaphone or whatever). Just don't plan on leaving anytime soon. You will want to linger until well into the night and hang out with the super cool proprietors and family. Summer is way too short and come labor day they roll up the tent and head back west so get on down and try every flavor. My fave? Vanilla. But that's just me. You might like the locally grown strawberry or heavenly maple walnut. All great. So hard to pick.

The ice cream is very good and they have a large selection, but it's the most expensive in the area.

My daughter who goes to NMH School introduced me to this gem of an ice cream shop. This is a place that NEVER disappoints because it is so good. All the ice creams, sorbets etc are made locally with local ingredients. The locals throng here as does all the students. The ginger ice cream and the maple walnut are especially good. There are pieces of candied ginger in the ginger ice cream giving it a wholesome taste and you can almost taste and smell fresh maple sap in the maple walnut - totally unlike factory made ice cream. The ice cream is packed with flavor because all the ingredients are local and fresh. Make sure the shop is open though, because it is closed except in the summer.

Okay, I'm biased. I grew up in Northfield. I remember the Creamie from before the bus hit it and they redid the facade. I used to ride my bicycle into town to get a Vanilla/Chocolate twist.

But the good news is that they've still got it. Plus they now stock locally-made scoop ice cream as well, from several different local ice cream dairies. I've never tried any of it, though, because I am a sucker for the original Creamie ice cream.

Beware, the Creamie is only open for the summer, roughly between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Northfield MA is a small, pleasant New England town near the Vermont border. It has what many such towns have: small local grocery store, a few galleries, well-kept homes, and friendly folks. What is unexpected is a really superb ice cream store, right on the main street that passes through town. But, that is what the Northfield Creamie is, one super little ice cream store. Here you can get cups or cones or floats, or whatever. And, the ice cream is mostly from the finest regional sources. Here you will find the standard flavors, but also the unexpected, like blueberry. The maple nut is remarkably good, with full flavor and walnuts that are right-on when it comes to how they should taste. Cones of all variety have a little surprise when you are almost done. In the bottom of the cone will be hidden a couple of m&m's, which make for a pleasant ending. Small tables are available as is a picnic table. So, you can sit and enjoy, or you can take a stroll along the main street and be greeted by friendly locals or others who happened by, or were on a mission to visit, who are doing the same thing as they enjoy their treat.
