Yes, the place is old. Yes, it's kind of dirty and the decor is tacky.
The service, however, is the absolute best in Northampton. After being disappointed and disgusted with my last experience at Sylvester's, I gave this place a shot. It's within walking distance of everything downtown, but it's handy to parking as well. It quickly became my favorite stop for breakfast, and not just because the coffee is always fresh and full.
Kathy is a quirky old lady who makes you feel like an old friend, or even family. The staff goes out of their way to accommodate some of the most demanding diets. Her burger buns are all gluten-free, and her ketchup has no high fructose corn syrup. She offers real maple syrup without charging an arm and a leg!
The place is small and quarters are cramped, but if you're passing through downtown and want a quick bite with a couple of friends, it's perfect. The portions are plentiful for what you pay, and the specials board always has an amazing deal.
If you want pristine and sterile diner ambiance, drive to Hadley and wait at the Route 9 Diner. If you want a real diner experience, go to Kathy's! I will send as many people here as I can. I have yet to be disappointed after going 20+ times!
