“A stellar historic venue in an arts-filled city”
Reviewed December 25, 2013

The Academy of Music is Northampton's gem. Recently renovated, it's the 6th oldest theatre in the US. Very grand and a flashback to more civilized times. It's a lovely place to see a concert, dance performance, or film.

“Nice sized theater for good seats”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

Has character inside, all the seats in the orchestra have a good view. Seats wide enough and aisles too so you can be comfortable. They offer snacks in the lobby. Great place to see and hear your favorite music or other event.

“The gem of Northampton”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

Almost any performance at the Academy provides a good reason to visit this restored gem. Go to the Academy and imagine yourself moving back in time, perhaps, 50, 75, or 100 years ago. Let the statue of Bogart (who greets you in the lobby) guide you in, and allow your surroundings to add depth to whatever event, concert or film you are there to see and hear.

“Beautiful for its own sake”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

This is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the US. Ad it's municipally owned. Originally an opera house, the Academy operated for decades as a big screen, first run, movie house while still hosting music events, variety shows, and the Northampton Film Festival.

An 800 seat auditorium is a huge hall to fill in a small town, but the programming frequently does just that. Live music sounds excellent, but the occasional film shown there suffers from an inadequate sound system and acoustics not designed for cinema.

Still, just to be inside this magnificent theater is worth the price of admission, and if you get to see a great show, all the better.
