they take the art seriously, and that is all types of art. We saw an acrobatic performance piece, wandered through the galleries of paintings and drawings, and got to make some art inspired by what we had seen.

The Smith Art Museum houses some terrific and famous works of art by artists you know in an appealing setting. Lovely little store with thoughtful objects, wearables that are perfect for gifts any time of year.

I have talked to people who live near to Northampton who have not been to the Smith College Museum of Art. I can't understand why not. Though it does not have holdings on the scale of the big city museums, their collection excellent and has works that will appeal to all tastes. For example, they have excellent paintings up right now by Joan Snyder, Philip Guston and Franz Kline, to name a few of the "moderns" who I like, but the also have a stunning Dewing and a Dwight Tryon that is jaw-droppingly beautiful. I happen to be a great admirer of Tryon, one of the wonderful American painters that few have ever heard of. He taught at Smith, but you can also see his work at the Freer Gallery in DC and other major art museums (when they decide to hang him).

If you're in Northampton, this is worth a look. The Smith College Museum of Art can easily be enjoyed in an hour or two and you'll find some excellent art on display. This includes some big names such as Monet, Picasso and other notables. The third floor has a really good exhibition of American artists on one side and French on the other. If you're looking for the highlights, the third floor is the best place to go. We happened to be there on a Saturday and it was a free admission day. The museum staffer who was present on the third floor was friendly, very informative and quite interesting. She told us many interesting things about how the museum acquired its collection and we really enjoyed speaking with her. This is right off the main street going through Northampton and it is easy to find. If you're touring the college or just enjoying buzzing around Main Street, it's a nice way to spend some time. Fun restaurants and shops are all together in the center of town and this museum is just up the block. It's a fun place to visit.

Thanks to the largesse of alumnae and other donors, Smith College has a distinguished collection of 18th, 19th, and 20th Century art, housed in a modern building. Not just for students, this is a full-service museum. It was one of the highlights of our visit to Northampton.
