“We went there for lunch one afternoon.”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

I thought the food here was better than other Spoleto restaurants. Nice location. Try Spoleto express for a quick sandwich.

“How to Mess up a Really Good Thing”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

When this place opened, it was really a phenomenal idea: give fans of the high end Spoleto restaurant a chance to get a quick lunch with a dash of haute cuisine. Sound good? Well that is exactly what they offered for the first couple of years or so of opening. Daily specials for dinner, fancy sandwiches for lunch, high quality ingredients, insanely large portions. A dream come true for a quick yet uncompromising food experience. I would go once a week on Monday, Chicken Parmesan night. They would offer a huge (2 chicken breasts with ziti) meal for 8.99. Bread, literally hot and fresh from the oven was there for the taking with butter, all to go. Dining in was possible, but high top seating and a full plate glass window view of King St Northampton made this less desirable. Still this was a five star do-not-miss restaurant stop.
Fast forward to this year. Gone are the specials. The last time I went for Chicken Parmesan night, I received a small amount of pasta, and a nebulously small pile of mozzerella cheese, which I assumed contained a reasonably sized, but single chicken breast. Upon arriving home, I found that it was mostly all cheese and congealed sauce, with a silver dollar sized piece of chicken. Other menu items had crept up in price to the point of being what most Italian places charge for 'fine dining'. Items that had been under ten were headed towards fifteen dollars in price, and significantly lessened in size and quality. Pizza now crowded out many of their older favorites. There was a lack of vitality and freshness that this place exuded and made its name on. I did not return.
This week, they announced that they are closing up shop. Perhaps demographics and tastes can change over time, but the drop in portion size and quality, combined with creeping price increases have to be integral to the closing. They had it all in the palm of their hands, and let it slip away. I am saddened that this happened to one of the best lunch places in the Valley.

“Gone downhill”
Reviewed April 29, 2012

This place was GREAT when it first opened....and we still stop by when we're in a hurry. Husband especially likes the thick, substantial Southwestern soup. The food is the same but the quality isn't as good--often not as "fresh" (feels like its been sitting around for hours) or well-prepared. It used to be great food fast....now it is good fast food. Wish it would come back up to its original status. Suspect that it no longer get good chef supervision but is just churning out food using provided recipes. Needs someone who really knows how to cook and keep the food fresh, hot, well-seasoned, etc.

“Fine Italian food in a semi fast food dining place”
Reviewed February 26, 2012

The Spoleto Restaurant in Northampton is one of the finer restaurants, and is often crowded - deservedly so. This place, Spoleto Express, is excellent for a quick lunch or dinner without sacrificing quality. The menu is limited to a few entrees, pizzas, salads, sandwiches and soups. They also have an impressive little selection of fine sodas. You can even do a combo at a reduced price.Speaking of prices, they are also lower than the full restaurant. There is no table service, however. You place your ordering is at the counter, and when your food is ready, your number is called so you can go up and get it. There are bins for silverware, and you bus your own dishes afterwards. The huge plus? There is also free fresh-baked bread to go along with your meal and/or soup.

“Delicious food--fast”
Reviewed February 16, 2012

Spoleto Express is perfect for those times when you want to have a great meal but don't have time for sit-down service. Choose from entrees, salads, sandwiches, or pizza. There's also a "Let's go halves" selection where you can try soup with half a sandwich or salad or slice. There are plenty of pub-style tables and a long counter along the window. It's self-serve for utensils and drinks, then self-clear when you're finished. I had the PLT (Pancetta with lettuce and tomato) and a crock of the sausage and bean soup. Both were delicious and hearty and only $6.95!! My husband enjoyed the meatball baguette sandwich. We will definitely return!
