"40 Lunch", as it's known, is tucked in on Green street adjoining the Smith College campus. Its offerings are fresh and tasty whether it be a sandwich with ethnic flair or delightful salad, a true french croissant or tarte de fruit. Wines are available by the glass as well as beers and tea and coffee. Delicious imported chocolates as well as high end domestic confections are also sold. The salads and sandwiches are made to order and have pairings that make theirs unique in town. They bake fresh baguette every day, but if there's an event at Smith and crowds come by, they might run out of bread! The baked goods are delicious but the variety is limited. We sampled a strawberry rhubarb tart that was simply perfect; flaky, slight chewiness, and just the right amount of sugar and tartness. Orders are taken at the counter and they can bring your food to you if you're seated outside but you'll save time by checking the counter periodically.
Sitting outside under the trees on a lazy summer afternoon makes this an especially enjoyable place to have lunch in the summer.
